Black smoke and vacuum blowing back through air filter

Hi, new to forum.
I've got a 307sw diesei with eml on.
Black smoke, especially under load and a sort of "sucking" noise from the air filter the like of which i can only liken to Hannibal lector.
Most of the usual suspects have been checked, EGR, vacuum at turbo ok etc so only the turbo left as chief suspect. Before I cough up a sizeable sum and change the turbo just wondered if anyone else has had a similar noise from their air filter??

I'd check the vacuum system, check the condition of the air filter for contamination, but sounds like a vacuum problem from the noise you are describing.
