Re: Nice places to stop off at.....
That's great Neil I did overhear a couple of locals speaking of one area of the park being an old quarry...
Again, like the cola mine, no evidence of it at all now...
One tenuous bit of evidence of its past is a big hill that looks like a bigger version of Slibury Hill or a mini version of Mont Ventoux... I reckon this is another old slag heap...

Re: Nice places to stop off at.....
This little extract is proper Trivia Investigation fodder so just a link. Looks like the "Hayes" bit relates to Hayes in Middlesex and some landed gentry connection, and that the Hartshill Woods were more "manorial woods" around Hartshill Castle rather than the industrial heritage of quarrying (which locally and surprisingly to me was a form of granite) and brickmaking.
Neilhttps://www.british-history.ac.uk/vch/w ... /pp131-133
etween the Nuneaton-Atherstone road and the village lie the extensive Hartshill quarries. Here red syenite granite is worked, as is manganese of a comparatively high quality. Tramways running in a north-easterly direction connect the quarries with the Coventry Canal and the L.M.S. Railway.
There is an extensive wood, known as Hartshill Hayes, stretching west from the village to the boundary of the civil parish of Oldbury. This corresponds to the manorial woods called in 1275 Suthaye, le Hokehaie, and le Newhaie. (fn. 2) On the eastern edge of the wood are the remains of Hartshill Castle.

Here's an extract of the 1901-1904 map of the area courtesy of https://maps.nls.uk
The country park is the bit labelled Hartshill Hayes (obvs !) and there are bits of quarry and mine around it.
Some lovely detail in the map - we've got a mortuary chapel, a hydraulic ram, a windpump, colliery houses, Neil's brickworks , the Royal Oak public house, a mineral railway and tramways, the vicarage - where I can imagine Alec Guiness playing the part of the vicar , a Sunday School, a castle with a moat (remains of), and plenty of benchmarks.

I'm really enjoying all this and that old map is amazing... Comparing it with an OS map of today is most revealing in what can still be identified... I'm loving this and really appreciate all your research Robin and NeilNewcastleFalcon wrote: ↑28 Apr 2023, 08:48 Looks like the "Hayes" bit relates to Hayes in Middlesex and some landed gentry connection, and that the Hartshill Woods were more "manorial woods" around Hartshill Castle rather than the industrial heritage of quarrying (which locally and surprisingly to me was a form of granite) and brickmaking.
Interesting about the Hayes bit and the memorial aspect... It still very much is...
The sloping table below the sign contains small tablets in memorium of those passed who loved the park and all the park benches have similar memorial tablets attached...

Re: Nice places to stop off at.....
Found a place just made for me on our way home from Benenden today:
So we had a burger and chips, mine washed down with an ice cold Guinness. Perfick!!
A truly inspiring place too, as you can see:
I forgot to say, you can find it on the A229 northbound side between M20 and M2 junctions!!

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!
I used to ride on two wheels, but now I need all four!

Didn't even know this was there until yesterday, in spite of being regular visitors, or travellers through Duns formerly the County town of the historic County of Berwickshire. Well hidden just behind the street in its extensive grounds.

Bit about the castle here
The event was this, and continues today. There is a long term road closure about 3 miles out of Duns going up from Coldstream and a bit of a detour to get to Duns, best to come at it from the A6105 from Berwick through Chirnside.
Jim Clark 60th Anniversary Weekend 24th & 25th June 2023.
To be held in Duns Castle Estate with the picturesque backdrop of Duns Castle, come along and view classic cars that were driven or previously owned by Jim Clark. This will be weekend of celebrating Lotus cars with proud car owners and car clubs on display.

The Seaside.
Anywhere/everywhere but on a day like today, Northumberland was good enough for me.
