EPS & ASR fault, diagnostic shows C1638 & C1135- drivable and intermittent, resolved by ignition off and key out

Unread post by pugnacious »

Evening all, first time posting. Apologies if this has been covered in another post, a search didn't reveal much.

1 week old owner of a 2015 "Style" (1.2 VTI) from a dealer. Test drove ok, documentation was ok, a basic OBD scan (all I had with me) was ok, so we bought it.

Driving home and the EPS light illuminated, infotainment screen indicated an EPS & ASR fault. Steering was still possible, but unpowered. I pulled over, killed the engine- nothing obvious but noted that ignition off, key out cleared the issue. I phoned the supplying dealer then and there, and they promised to honour the warranty; all I needed to do was get it fixed and they'd foot the bill.

The fault persists but is intermittent. Of the 6 days I've owned it, for 4 out of these the fault appeared and it's been driven every day. The quick fix still works.

There's an independent Pug/Citroen specialist nearby so I dropped it in there for diagnostics today. 2 codes present
-C1638 (estimation of steering wheel angle- consistency)
-C1135 (steering wheel angle sensor signal from s.w angle estimator or s.w controls- internal)

They cleared these, recalibrated the angle sensor, checked for wiring faults. They also warned me that if it occurred again their recommendation would be for a new EPS/rack unit to be fitted, as these codes indicate an impending failure in that area. I understand that on the 208 rack and EPS etc are all amalgamated.

The prices from Peugeot are eye-watering...he showed me this on their ordering platform: £1900. Yikes With labour involved, that would mean about £2500. That's non-optimal.

I have the choice of challenging the dealer on their promise to repair this, or reject the car. Probably the latter I think.

But I wondered about 2 questions in my mind that I hoped someone could maybe answer:

1)Is this a common thing? I had hoped to leave the EPS issues behind with my last 207
2)Is a new rack/EPS unit from Peugeot my only option? Are there any refurb or similar manufacturers out there, to maybe try and lower the cost?

ta

Oh, and I should add: the fault occurred again on the way back from the indy :(

Don't you think that the problems you have identified is probably the reason why the previous owner sold the car to the dealer! 😳.
Take it back if you can, or get it fixed at someone else's expense. 👍
