Garage faults - at my personal cost - what's reasonable?

Unread post by Gavelb »

Good Morning,
I'm after some advice please as I'm not entirely sure where I should go with this next. My car went in for its MOT a few weeks back. When they picked it up it was in limp mode and the horn didnt work and would randomly go off. I asked them to change the fuel filter as it was in limp mode as this had fixed the problem previously and that the horn didnt work and possibly just the fuse needed changing. Anyway, they MOT'd it and it failed and they said it needed the following to pass:

New wipers £33
New rear discs and pads £240
New headlamp unit £250
Handbrake adjustment £47.50

They also charged £60 to replace the fuel filter. So just short of £650. It took 2 weeks to agree to it all as I was going to do the work myself as I didnt have any money but we had a family death and other stuff took over. I had to borrow money so the garage could carry out the work - they had originally offered a payment plan as they know I'm on low income but because I supplied the headlamp to save money they then said they couldnt do the payment plan! Anyway, they do all the work they said it needed to pass the MOT and put it through for the new MOT then come back and say its failed again because the horn doesnt work - which I told them in the first place!! They said when they put it on the diagnostic to look at what is causing the horn fault it records a problem with the main 'brain of the car' - cant remember what's they called it but its 'serious money to fix' and they recommend just rewiring the horn separately @ 1.5 hrs labour so another £180. Also said the diagnostic came up with a fault with ECU and fuel delivery problem so car will likely still be in limp mode when I get it back. So will be over £850 and I get back a car with a problem with the 'main brain' and a problem with the ECU/fuel delivery (rail pressure I think) and still in limp mode. Or, I can 'stop now and pay £480' but I get the car back with all these problems and no MOT. I pointed out to the garage had the horn problem been picked up on the 1st MOT they would have run the diagnostic as part of their quote to fix everything and would have told me to not bother doing anything as it the cost would be more than the value of the car to replace the main component and fix everything else - which they've now done at my expense. I've asked them to come back to me today with a reasonable solution but I really want an idea of what I should be insisting/expecting is a reasonable solution. As I see it if they had tested the horn on the 1 st test as they should have and run the quotes to fix everything all it would have cost me is £29 for the MOT. But because they didnt its now cost me £100 for the headlamp I bought and supplied plus whatever they come up with as their 'solution' for a car that is effectively worthless.

What do you think is a reasonable solution/outcome in these circumstances?

Thanks everyone - all advice gratefully

Look for a different garage.
