Accident rebuilt Berlingo B9 ABS Fault 1213-81

Hi,

Van was in an accident and got ESP light on after rebuild test drive, which has gone but fault is a permanent one according to Diagbox. Loom was moved by accident as well as pump bracket.

Error code U1213 81 Fault in the communication with the ABS/ESP ECU

Cause Distant
Status Permanent
Characterisation of fault: Communication Not Valid

Before I start dismantling, can anyone shed some light on communication not valid and/or the specific error code. Brakes work, clutch etc. Do get some tyre spin though.

It MAY be possible to get the relevant ECUs reset by specialist companies. I recall DHallworth purchasing a Citroen C6 that had had the airbags go off (when a kerb was clipped, IIRC), and he sent the airbag ECU off for it to be reset. If you scroll down the page of the following link he mentions sending the ECU in a paragraph below the photo of a bowl of dirty water;

The reason I mentioned airbag ECU is that was what had 'locked up' in DHallworths' case. If a different ECU had 'locked up' because of the crash (and was not actually faulty) it may still be possible to get it reset.

If the loom was moved in the crash, it's entirely possible that a wire was damaged or broken inside its plastic cover or perhaps an earth fault. Might even be a crack in the pump housing has dislodged some connections. SHOULD have been checked by repair shop though....

This fault has gone and now replaced with C0040 62 which is a brake pedal sensor incoherence fault. Comes on intermittently, usually starts at speed bumps then stays until the next ignition cycle where it goes. Could be a broken wire jumping or hard braking at the bumps (switch). The freeze frame on diagbox shows all wheel speeds as zero so will live data the esp ecu first to make sure its giving any data at all. If live data checks out, will replace brake pedal switch. If not wiring and more likely the ecu/pump itself.
Ill take off the passenger wheel arch liner and follow the wires from the abs ecu connector.

Yeah exactly, hes more a crash damage guy but would have thought he would check the pump/wiring when fixing the leg however.

Luckily its a van so removing wheel, then the arch liner should give me a good view of the pump and the loom+connector.

The fix was changing the brake pedal switch.

Now a year later the ABS system is giving me issues.

Abs, ESP, Stop lights on.

Scan with diagbox shows the following results

Vehicle starts and runs normally. Why would the brake pedal sensor fault come back a year later. Switch cannot have failed in a year surely. However I dont remember if I pressed the brake pedal while testing when I had removed the brake switch again and it may have stored that code. Is there more than one brake pedal switch?

Usually this vehicle has a ABS+Fuel pump relay on the front of the fuse box, this bluehdi 1.6 doesn't have one. I cannot find one. The large fuses beneath the main fuse board all look visually ok. If this vehicle does have a Recirculation pump supply relay, I cannot find it. Unless its built into the ABS ECU?

Please assist anyone with knowledge. I think finding out if the vehicle has a abs relay would be a start. If Marc or anyone else could please provide the ABS wiring diagram for VIN VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] . That would help.

"Brake pedal sensor" - "Lack of coherence of the signal" certainly smacks of a faulty switch as a possible cause - new parts can fail early or be of mediocre quality.

Lack of coherence = of the two switches within the circuit, one is open, one closed.

You mentioned two brake switches, where might the other one be? Would the brake switch, knock out the ABS relay? Last time this happened I could still actuate the pump with Lexia.

It consists of two opposing switches; one that is a 'push to make' style (used for the brake lights), and the other is a 'push to break' style (to disconnect a cruise control system). A Lexia system can usually detect the status of both switches, but I cannot remember which menu option this is in.

I have just looked on the GSF website (using the information you have provided), and they have brake switches starting for £15. You would need to use the vehicle reg to refine the search (if you were to buy a switch from them).

I just rescanned after reseating the switch. Fault gone.
