Good Afternoon
I am doing the timing belt on my pug Partner I have done these about 3 times and countless times on the old DW8 engines
Fitted belt
Tensioned
turn on wrench a few times checked TDC/Timing positions a couple of times
Left covers off left fan belt off
Started to watch and check
Ran perfect and reved up but belt slowly started making its way off on the cam pully
Shut off engine!
It looks like the belt is being guided off the run by the tensioner and I cant fathom out the reason why
I have checked the new tensioner and it looks OK comparing it with the old one
I might fit the old one on tomorrow and see if it still does
Any further ideas
Many Thanks Jeremy

I have just had a though I tighten the tensioner clockwise as opposed to anti clockwise
This would alter the run Is this likely to be the problem.
If I don't get back on it tomorrow I will be starting again mid week

I am just updating on this
I did not make it clear exactly how I was running the engine and in what state
I was running the engine with the bare minimum to test the belt before putting it back together .
This meant that I was running the engine with out the crack shaft pulley and the crankshaft is set 2mm back from the rest of the run meaning that without the pulley the belt will run off
There is very little reference to this online and it is important for people to know that you can only run up the engine with the crankshaft pully on and done up tight!

Oh gosh yes! The crank pulley against the cam drive sprocket form the primary method of guidance for the belt...DEVON DOGG wrote: 12 Apr 2023, 12:30 There is very little reference to this online and it is important for people to know that you can only run up the engine with the crankshaft pully on and done up tight!
You were lucky it stayed on long enough for you to stop the engine!
I once had a belt 'wandering' a little on the sprockets due to the new waterpump shaft running a little eccentrically! Beware water pumps that seem to be very good value, of a brand you've never heard of and sourced from eBay - there's a reason why they're so cheap...
Like you, I always like to check a belt is running nicely before popping the covers back on... Gives a bit of peace of mind...

Doesn't the aux belt pulley and crank bolt often keep the toothed cam belt pulley on the crank itself? (Just the Woodruff key and a bit of friction keeping the whole thing in place!?)
I think that was a quite incredibly lucky "near miss" there!
(Think I'd put crank pulley and bolt on, even if not fully torqued up for any future test runs!)

Indeed it does Matt... It and the engine side of the cam sprocket form a pair of guide 'cheeks' for the belt...MattBLancs wrote: 12 Apr 2023, 20:16 Doesn't the aux belt pulley and crank bolt often keep the toothed cam belt pulley on the crank itself? I am knocking on a bit but still quite fast
Like Mahammad Ali said "At bedtime I hit the light switch and I'm under the covers before the bulb goes out"
Well that was me when the belt decided to shoot out the garage door!
My old Pug has done 250,000 miles and still runs well ,just done the belt fitted new axillary belt and tensioner ,just fitting new front brakes and the new front tyres are down the tyre workshop being fitted .
It may need a new clutch and I will do that when the weather is warm
I actully use this as a vehicle for my courier company . We always joke that the insurance is more than the car is worth but I like it when I make money out of old vehicles and I do like this car despite the fact it looks like I have given up on life!
