ESP and directional lamps fault

Unread post by Dunkah »

Hi all,
Recently had another steering rack fitted ( which makes 3 racks now) on a 2008 c5 x7,
When I had the last one done, immediately after I had an esp warning lamp and directional lights not working (which makes sense as I’ve discovered on other threads), but within a few minutes of driving it corrected itself and was no problem after that.
Unfortunately the rack failed within a few months and I’ve just had another fitted. I picked up the car today and have driven it about 8 or so miles, the esp and headlight warning is still on and it hasn’t corrected. Before returning it to me my mechanic test drove it for a good few miles and he thinks a sensor may be out, he’s offered to get one and fit it for me, but I’m hoping it’ll just correct itself like it did the previous time that I had a rack fitted.
I don’t really want to try a bhi reset as I fear that’ll tempt fate and cause any number of other issues.
What’s anyone else opinion on this? Especially if anyone has experience with this issue occurring to them.
Many thanks

I suspect that either the steering wheel angle sensor needs recalibrating which needs to be done under the following:
  • Removing - refitting Flywheel angle sensor
  • Track adjustment
  • Replacement of the dynamic stability control (ESP) ECU
  • Replacement of the switch module at the steering wheel
  • Work carried out on the steering column or mounting
The other thing is are you certain the correct rack was fitted? There are 2 types each with a different steering angle. If you fit the incorrect one for the vehicle you will run into problems. If this is for your X7, VIN ending 057 then you need to make sure it is the 180° Rack, not the 184° version.
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

Thanks Marc, I’ll pass on the information to my mechanic.
Yeah it’s definitely the right rack, already have hit that problem hard, had one supplied that was the wrong one, absolute nightmare, didn’t fit at all, got the correct one in now
Thanks
