Rear Suspension Query

Unread post by SteveH1908 »

Hi, this weekend I had my tyres replaced on my Xsara Picasso. I noticed whilst this was been done that on the rear offside a plastic covering had come away on one of the suspension components. This was intact on the rear nearside. I have included 2 pictures to hopefully show this (one where the covering has come away vs. the one where it is intact). Can I please ask; is this something to be concerned about and need sorting ASAP? I also have an MOT coming up next month, so unsure whether this would be a fail? Many thanks, Steve.

If you're referring to the rubber shock absorber boot, then you need to get that replaced (and if doing so, you will need to replace them in pairs - so the other side will need doing too), as having one new and one used can affect vehicle stability. Dirt, grit and water will get into the damper and can lead to rapid deterioration / failure.

Unfortunately Citroen don't show these as having replaceable boots.

As far as MOT goes, it's debatable whether this will constitute a fail under:

Defect Category

(a) A suspension component:

(i) insecurely attached to chassis or axle - Major
(ii) missing, likely to become detached or directional stability impaired - Dangerous

(b) A suspension component:

(i) excessively damaged or corroded - Major
(ii) fractured or likely to fail - Dangerous

(c) A suspension component:

(i) with an unsafe modification - Major
(ii) modified so that the suspension is inoperative or likely to foul other components - Dangerous

Thank you Marc for your comprehensive reply. From what you are suggesting with the boots not being replaceable, would it therefore be best to get 2 new shock absorbers for both near and offside rear?

If it was my vehicle, yes, I'd have both rear struts replaced.

If your shock absorber is still performing as it should, the plunger shaft is free from corrosion an no oil sepage you could just buy and fit an afternarket cover.
They should stretch over the top bolt eye/post and secure with either friction or a cable tie at the bottom, therefore saving a couple of quid.
Quick search on Ebay item no. 254989996850 £16.74. (this is an example not necessarily the correct part for you car.)

Thank you again Marc and also Stu for your input. I know there is no oil seepage as of now, but the rear struts both look quite old and I think I'll look to have the replaced soon. I've started to use Autodoc for parts and these seem reasonable and a recognised brand https://www.autodoc.co.uk/monroe/7435807. Seem considerably less price wise than say GSFcarparts.
