Sorry, which bearing?
The pinion bearing/bush ? I'd have thought that had a relatively easy life, not sure if that'll need changing.
Just to be clear the 6203zz bearing on my order isn't related to this job

I was thinking on changing it while I have it out. I will see how it feels when I have it out.

Re: C5 X7 Steering Rack - Again!
Darbuck is going to beat me at current rate, my rack is ok at present, I just worry enough about it to start accumulating bits "just in case"
Having said that, if I spot a rack cheap enough (and that free one went quick! But also a bit far away too) then I will likely attempt the project ahead of needing it.
I've bought a couple of the speedi sleeves (and four of the R23 type lip seals) mostly so I am not stuck if failed at first attempt at a fix.
Rest assured though, when I progress it, it'll be on here for all to enjoy (whether works or not!)

Just an update can't drop the subframe my jack finally gave up the ghost new one ordered. Have to prioritise other cars next week when it arrives, they need suspension and brake work. It will be May now before I get to the steering rack.

Re: C5 X7 Steering Rack - Again!
Hi All, I have finally pulled the steering rack, I had to drop the subframe to get it out, I had to drop the back of the subframe by about 4" to get enough clearance. I have taken the pinion out and stripped the bearing bush and seals. The bearing is rough so will replace it while I am at it, The shaft was actually in quite good condition a bit of pitting but not too bad I will sleeve it any way. There was loads of crap in the seal so only a matter of time. I am not changing any other seals apart from the two in the pinion housing. I am going to change the tie rods and tie rod ends. the sway bar bushings are worn as well so I am going to change them while I have the subframe lowered. I wouldn't like to be doing any of this with the engine in. I am starting to see light at the end of the tunnel on rebuilding this car.

Re: C5 X7 Steering Rack - Again!
It's not a problem, you disconnect the lower engine mounting and lower the subframe, it's alot easier gettjng the rack out if you have a pair of hands on each end of the rack.
