Too much LDS oil

Unread post by ivancro96 »

So my mechanic changed my front struts + LDS oil as well, when I put the car to lowest position (easier to wipe the roof), popped the hood to top up the window washer fluid, I noticed severe leaking from the LDS reservoir cap. I removed the cap slowly and it was completely overfilled, I was wondering if that could cause anything? Now the level sits at a bit above max, after lots of wiping.

The LDS level should be checked and adjusted with the diagnostic tool (Diagbox/LEXIA/) and if possible in "depressurised". There are many posts about this in the forum.
As long as the vehicle is not set to the lowest position or depressurised, nothing usually happens.
According to your description, too much LDS was filled in.
The biggest problem with overflow is that the LDS enters the motor for the BHI and sooner or later causes a short circuit there - wait and hope or clean the motor.
There are already many posts about this problem too.

Can't say categorically but when I bought my last C5 it was overfilled and suspiciously red.
When on the lowest setting it was just over the max mark.
Never had any problems and it was OK for several years, and I did the 'Citroebics' frequently.

Eventually a pipe started leaking, it had been rubbing on a clip and eventually wore through. I had to fill it up with Comma LDS (green) to get it up to be loaded onto a transporter. New pipe fitted, proper LDS filled and no further problems.

Check the reservoir for leaks as under some circumstances they can split due to overpressure.

LDS should only be checked and topped on the lowest suspension setting between the 'a' & 'b' marks as shown. Ideally depressurised as Wolfgang memtioned, but on the lowest suspension setting if you can't do this.

Yeah, the mechanic apparently didn't know that, thankfully the oil didn't overflow to some electrics, I wiped it all off wherever it went and it now sits below the cap, still a bit too much in there though, will get it to a proper Citroen mechanic tomorrow for adjusting

I would be prepared to drain the reservoir, and then remove, strip and clean the suspension pump motor. It is directly underneath the reservoir, and when the LDS mixes with the carbon dust (generated from the brushes in the motor) it forms a conductive paste that will blow the 40A Maxi fuse and can damage the motor.
