DS5 Buying Guide

Hi there, I am new to this forum and required a bit of info please. I have been looking to buy a 2013 Citroen DS5 2 litre diesel Sport and wondered if there was a buyers guide on the forum or a list of things to check when purchasing. Thanks in advance.

I guess you can read up on the car itself from various online reviews from the motoring press, but observations:
  • Bear in mind they have been out of production for over 5 years now since the last facelifted models.
  • Beware of the hybrids, as the battery packs will be end of warranty and these costs circa 6k to replace.
  • Suspension can be hard.
  • Everything on these is very compact, so not a lot of room to work - especially the cabin.

Hi Marc, thanks for the help, I noticed you are based in West Wales, the car I have put a holding deposit on is in Bassetts Citroen Swansea, I have never used them before and wondered if you have had any dealings with them and what you thought. I have Covid at the moment so haven't been able to see the car yet, hoping to get there in the next couple of days.

I tend to use Bassetts in Carmarthen as it's a lot nearer, but have bought a car from the Swansea branch previously. No issues at all, but I mostly use the Carms branch for all my servicing now and I get excellent service as I've been a customer for over 30 years.

Your DS5 being a 2013 model will likely be a Citroen-badged model. It most likely will be the DW10CTED4 (163) engine which if so, will be the later version of the DW10BTED4 (138) - a very reliable engine.

Although the DW10CTED4 is a later Euro 5 version that has better economy and is lower to tax, a lot of these improvements resulted in redesigned parts and relocation to fit everything in and meet the Euro 5 standard.

Just bear in mind that it is 10 years old now, so service history is essential and if it is from Bassetts see what sort of history it has and warranty. They are very nice cars and cost a bomb when new (circa 32k ish) so depending on trim you do get a lot for your money, but like anything with a lot of tech, it can cost when parts need replacing. Having said that, it's pretty much the same for most cars now.

Again, thanks for your help. The car I have been looking at does have full Bassetts service history and only one owner. It has done 69000 miles and I am wondering when it would require a cambelt service, I read some where that this information requires the VIN, is that the case?

Yes, just pop it up (please post your VIN in full without spaces - it will be automatically masked from public view after submitting your post & will only be visible to staff), then I can provide you with the correct interval for the specific engine.

Ok, so confirmed you have the 163 Powered DW10CTED4 engine.

Timing Belt on this is every 120k miles or 10 years whichever comes first. So in the case of this vehicle it is due now on an age related basis. Maybe you could negotiate that into the price.

As for the DPF, that should be checked at 120k miles and every 20k miles thereafter for clogging.
