Retrofit Steering wheel Peugeot 208

Unread post by gerinemo »

Hi All
Not having much luck finding an answer to this :-(
I have a 2013 Peugeot 208 1.4 HDI ( Access ) I think
The steering wheel has no radio controls they are on a stalk under the wheel
I have bought a new Dynavin head unit but the stalk controls do not work on this so I was wondering if I could replace the steering wheel with one from a higher spec model with the radio controls ? I have diagbox & full chip interface
Will I need to remove the airbag to see if the cabling is present
I ask this as there were no cables for the rear door speakers and no mic cable in the headliner after I swapped out the factory single din radio for another single din with usb and bluetooth

Many thanks for any replies

I highly doubt that will work. The steering wheel control units are vehicle-specific and work with the specific CAN controls for your vehicle, depending on the options and head unit fitted to your vehicle. You can't just replace parts from different vehicles and expect them to work as they operate differently and rely on other systems to work correctly.

I suspect your steering wheel control module is designed for your specific vehicle and won't have the interface or controls for a later steering wheel control interface. Build dates also make a difference to what was fitted and what is compatible.

Hi Marc
Thanks for your reply
I took out the Airbag today to have a look and from what i have seen on youtube the steering wheel controls plug in to a blue connector on the airbag module

My airbag module has the same connection
But I think you are right nothing is ever straight forward :-(
In diagbox the steering wheel controls are listed as no dialouge & I was kind of hoping that it was because ther was nothing plugged in to that connector at the moment but that would be too good to be true
Does any one know of any kind of bluetootth steering wheel controls that would work on a Dynavin D8
The the existing stalk controls only partially work with the built in canbus of the unit
Mute works and the roll wheel in the middle skips fwd and back but no vol + or - no source or track back and forward on the buttons

Thanks

You may need to source a suitable CAN bus interface for the Head Unit that you have and only the manufacturer can advise of this if one exists. It's all down to the hardware and electronic architecture of the unit and the vehicle. Android users have similar issues, so getting the correct CAN interface is essential.

Howdy
Yeah the CAN appears to be built in to the head unit and not a separate box
it appears to be partially working as is is getting the temp and fuel consumption details / mileage from the car

There appears to be no option for the head unit to learn the current stalk controls :-(

I have been on to support for the unit who in fairness did reply quickly
They got me to access diagnostic menu to see what the buttons were doing / sending when pressed but it seems to be just information no programming
They said they would forward on my request to the developer to add the stalk in to future firmware updates
But god knows how long that could take
This was my simplistic thinking that I could replace the steering wheel :-(
If that's a non runner I thought about possibly adding 3rd party Bluetooth steering wheel control

Any of the Bluetooth steering controls i have seen on eBay / Amazon appear to have a box that is wired in and then Bluetooth from that interface to the 3rd party steering wheel control
which is then learned through the Menu / settings which my new head unit does not seem to have
No factory setting / no steering wheel learning :-(

Many Thanks for your replies

For Future reference / anyone looking to do the same
I bought a replacement steering wheel with the audio controls which arrived today
I put in the new steering wheel and plugged in the audio control cable
Needless to say nothing happens when trying the controls
I connected diagbox and set integral controls steering wheel to be present in BSI and still nothing so looking like it may be a lost cause :-(
But the new leather steering wheel looks a lot better than than the plastic one
