Renault clio alternator belt

Unread post by JG_ »

I have a 2002 renault clio 1.2 with a screaming alternator belt. It should be a simple job but the only problem is that my car has the air con unit that sits on top of the alternator and belt.
How do i get to the belt? will i have to remove the AC unit? or will i have to get acces elsewhere? :-D

Are you sure that it is the belt though.
My C5 was the same but it turned out to be the alternator clutch/frewheel pulley.
A cheap fix (£30) but it had also destroyed the dual-mass crankshaft pulley so was £160 approximately complete.

Tbh im not sure its the belt, could very well be the pulley. it only makes sound whenever i use the fan, power windows, stereo and basically anything that needs power. i did spray some water on the belt and the squealing stopped for a few secdonds. My main problem is just getting acces to the pulley and belt.

I have a Clio 2 in the maintenance fleet. Try this guy's video, its on a Clio 2. I think it will cover what you are looking for and I have used his channel to help with for other jobs.

That is what the people supposedly looking after my C5 had as a remedy, not a very useful one.

I took mine to a newly opened garage near where I worked, the proprietor is a friend of some Polish people I worked with (when I told one of them she said "Don't take your car to Polish man"!) until I told her who he was, then she was all in favour as he was a friend of hers too.

He was outside as I drove in and asked how he could help, when I mentioned the squeal he said "Thought so"!
He knew what it was without looking, but he did look to confirm it.
Luckily, when he first came to Britain he was employed by one of the biggest Citroen dealers in the area and knows them inside out but doesn't specialise.

There is, or was, something called "Remwax" when I was in Sweden, is it still available. Made to stop belts slipping.

To add a little bit to what has already been said, I can confirm that the Clio 2 1.2 16 V when fitted with air conditioning has 2 separate drive belts. One from the Crankshaft pulley to the Alternator (the thin one) and one from the crankshaft pulley to the Air conditioning pump (the thicker one).

Also the very easy access to the alternator drive belt in the video was for a model without Air Conditioning, but true enough the procedure for renewal of that belt is as the video, but as JG points out access is awkward. Only a couple of bolts to slacken on the alternator to move it to take the tension off the belt and remove it, and similarly on re-tensioning the new belt so not that difficult, and access from underneath probably is the best bet for that belt.

Here are a few pics of the Clio 2 in my maintenance fleet hopefully it shows the two drive belts. They are literally, ( in spite of the slightly duff photography), the finest pictures of the two belts in situ on a D4F 1.2 16V Clio 2 with Air Con anywhere on the world wide web.
