Hi all,
Just wondering if using a diesel additive such as "redex" direct in the tank when filling is worth it. Is there any benefit to this as the car has an adblu system so I would imagine the fuel and exhaust system would be fine as it is.
Car is a 2ltr 2015 DS5 hdi blu, 53000 miles on clock, no emmision warnings or smoke from exhaust, fully serviced since new, seems to run smoothly
Cheers
Dave

Adblue has nothing to do with it Dave, they are separate systems that do different jobs. I suggest you watch the videos here:
Adblue is part of the SCR system to treat the NOx elements of the emissions as they enter the Catalytic converter and has nothing to do with the fuel injection system.
and here for the DPF:
This will show the different systems.
Redex is generally added to the fuel system periodically to clean the injection system.

Funny you should mention it, I'm currently running a dose of Redex in both the Berlingo and the DS5 (both diesels).
I've done this occasionally in the past, but not for years. The cue was Tesco flogging the stuff at £2.50 a bottle! I put in a double dose - a full 250ml bottle in each
I've seen a fairly good increase in average mpg in the Berlingo, up from 47mpg to 52. The journeys are always very repeatable, this seems to be a genuine improvement rather than a blip. I don't know how quickly this benefit will fade once it's used up, but it's proably paid for itself already.
In the DS5 I've seen little or no difference - 48mpg as usual. I bought this car used last year.
Obviously both cars get driven pretty gently, and there are no huge hills around here.
My conclusion is that the Berlingo probably had partially clogged injectors, the DS5 didn't. It can't improve things if there's no problem to fix. Perhaps the DS5 was treated before I bought it and/or it's had posh fuel instead of Tesco's finest.
The bottle states it's fine for use with DPFs.
I'd suggest chucking a bottle in and seeing what happens. It's a tiny investment, it won't do any harm and is likely to do some good.
I've used Redex Diesel on the previous 1.6 16V HDi C3 when it started to suffer from the occasional splutter after a period of light use before we sold her. It had been dealer serviced from new, and the splutters manifested into a sudden lurch and lack of power up a hill.
So filled the tank up to half and stuck in the equivalent volume of Redex (and a dash more) then went on a rally up the Welsh mountains near me. I had one enormous splutter and that was the end of it. So probably helped clean out a blockage and ran as normal like a dream after that.
So I'd certainly recommend it for maintaining the fuel system maybe once or twice a year.

The "Italian Tune Up" in action!
I'd try that first off, ahead of adding in any of the potions!
Nice one guys, my 2ltr auto is averaging 43 mpg with local runs and occasional motorway trips. Will give a bottle a try and see if it makes any difference, although will be worth it just to keep fuel system clean.
