I agree with James, I'd go for cormorants!
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

It was famous for the colonies of seabirds on it, several varieties.

Clearly I've not spent enough time at the seaside in recent years or my glasses are not as good as I think they are

Most Geordies I know and have known are on the biggish side Steve... Not in an obese sort of way but in a well built sort of way...
That goes for both sexes

It might be worth getting your cameras out tonight. The Northern Lights were (apparently) seen as far south as Cornwall last night, and it is though it might happen again tonight.

All joking aside, I'd love to see them as I never have... But like you Steve, I fear our vision may be clouded...

I kick myself repeatedly for never having seen them, despite living in Sweden. I can't imagine how I managed that.
I keep trying to se the starlink satellites but only managed once and only one of them, the rest obliterated by cloud moving in.
On clear nights the damned things have always gone on holiday.

Apparently a digital camera (or camera phone) will 'see' far more detail, as they 'translate' invisible light (such as UV) into light visible to the human eye. According to the BBC Breakfast this morning what YOU might see is a shimmering white cloud, but the camera will show you a more spectacular sight.

Can't see the clouds for the clouds.
In the eighties there were a couple of Japanese kite makers used to visit the local schools and help the kids build kites. In September there was always a kite festival where all the kites were flown, quite a big event.
Wish I could remember their names. The kids were all very enthusiastic and loved the kite builders coming to their schools.

Re: Picture(s) of the day....
Some of this fits in with your recollection Steve. Kite builders (but not Japanese) working in schools back in 2009 and a kite festival at Washington.

These two were definitely Japanese, I met them at the local school that my kids went to, and also at the kite festival.

Miniature daffodils spotted whilst out on my morning run after a remarkably successful shopping trip to Tesco... I even scored a punnet of tomatoes and a pepper
