Dear all
i am sure this has been on the forums many times. So apologies. i have a 2007 renault megane 1.6 petrol, estate.
When draining the oil, I stupidly first drained the gearbox oil - as i didnt have a manual and aimed for the obvious drain plug.
I now need of course to top up the gearbox oil.
Taking the left side - nearside (its RHD) wheel off, I can see the gear box end. There is a torx type plug marked 17 II - seems very large for a torx bolt. On the various you tube vieros for this type of car, it should just be a plastic plug. Above and to th left is a bigger bolt - but I dont think thats gear box related.
I would be grateful for any ideas about what socket to use to get the filler plug off
thanks patrick

Re: gearbox top up plug
This isn't really a Renault specialised forum but generally the fill plug is also the level plug. Fill/level plugs normally look like a sump plug on the side of the box. Although the BOLs is crap these days, better than nothing.

Re: gearbox top up plug
I don't know if this would help, but when I had to change the gearbox on a Citroen I found it easier to top it up via the reverse switch hole (obviously with the reverse switch removed). If this looks like it would work, remove the official fill plug so that you will know that you cannot overfill the gearbox (which can cause other issues).

Re: gearbox top up plug
Patrick, have a look at this Vid, extract from it what you consider relevant. It's for a 2008-2014 Megane but might just help.pug205 wrote: 22 Feb 2023, 15:08 Dear all

Looks like the filler plug is a plastic winged-plug in the vicinity of the driveshaft/diff housing. 1.45 in the video shows the plug. Might just figure. I have just changed the gearbox oil on a Renault Clio which also has one of those plastic winged plugs albeit in a different location.
Looks like the drain plug is a square drive, the Clio's is 8mm square.

Re: gearbox top up plug
Thanks all for your advice. I finally managed to locate the filler plug - its on the side of the gearbox which is placed E/W in the engine bay, its on the side facing the radiator. You cant see it fro above because of the battery, only from below.
I jacked the car up a bit then from underneath, filled the gearbox using a syringe - took a while as the oil is very viscous.
Not a job to repeat often thank goodness!
thanks all
