Steering rack

Unread post by Sean1966 »

Hi
I have a Peugeot partner and the steering has gone heavy I have replaced pump and no change I then replaced steering rack to which again made it a bit better but still not right so was told to replace the hydraulic ram which operates rack but still not right has anyone got any ideas
Some one mentioned the top strut bearings but not sure if this affects the steering

Strut top bearings are in use when turning the steering. In my experience they clunk and are quite audible turning lock to lock. Sometimes also here the coil spring "twang" as it twists and releases. Don't think I could feel significant resistance from it on my 306 despite when replacing the bearings found them completely knackered, dropping to bits and a few of the ball bearings lost!

Wonder if something steering column related is your issue - universal joint, column bearings etc worth a look

Sorry for terrible "point phone at monitor" picture, but just came across it whilst looking for something else.

This is quite how bad the 306's strut top bearings were, and still only really a noise rather than resistance felt at the wheel!

If I am doing anything front suspension related on a "new" (to me) car, then I'll usually consider changing these. Dead cheap (£12? From memory)

(But not changed my mind on earlier thoughts that is steering column related in your instance)
