"How long do car tyres last"

Unread post by Sloppysod »

Just searched for "how long do car tyres last" and found this....🗑️
https://carsamazing.com/tire-tread-life ... ncy-chart/ and according to the website "Usually, tire tread life expectancy for passenger car tires is 50,000 to 80,000 miles"
Surely no one gets 50,000+ out of a set of tyres, well I know I don't, 20-25,000 max!

Sorry but the Tire Life expectancy chart seems to assume you are going down past the chords. 6 years at 8mm, 3 years at 2mm. 0 life at -4mm?
Room 101 for this article IMO

In practice tyre life and wear is subject to a whole lot of factors

I know of someone's grandad who had a 1.1 206, very gently driven. Rear tyres changed as perished at 10 years old - 80,000 miles covered and not down to the tread wear indicators at that point!

(But life's too short for driving that sedately if you ask me!)

P.s. that's a terrible article. Like something written by a machine. Full of nonsense!

Probably that thing called "Artificial Intelligence" just like 'Quora', same sentences just different nouns.

My BX back in the UK, mainly up and down the A38 from Lichfield to Toyota at 70mph plus knock about miles with Michelins used to do 60K on the rear and 30 fronts.

Notice the BX is still top the list but sadly gone

I had a set of Michelin X radials on a van ( HA or 105E ? ) and they hardly seemed to wear at all. Trouble was they were lethal on damp cobbles - zero grip. Absolutely fabulous on dry tarmac. Only got caught out once. Once was enough.

I know the Xantia is renown for having rear tyres fail due to age cracking, despite having plenty of tread depth.

Although heavy electric cars are supposed to be hard on tyres the Zoe at 8 years old and with near 40k miles on the clock is still on its original tyres and they look barely half worn. :)

Ah but they did have the advantage of not a great deal beyond the weight of the tyre itself pushing each wheel against the tarmac! :-D
