How to lower a sub-frame safely without a jack (holding it up) whist you work under the car.
The tools needed to lower my Xantia Activa rear sub-frame
Remove each frame bolt one at a time, insert threaded rod and advance the locking nut/washer to hold it in place.
Do this for all 4 bolts
(Note twin locking nuts at one end.).....Double CHECK each rod is fully inserted in the mounting threads.....
Hold the rod with a vice grip to prevent rotation and undo the support nut/washer a few turns at a time to lower the subframe down in stages..
OR,
You can hold the subframe up with a jack and set the support nuts at a set even height, lower the frame onto this set of nuts/washers slowly.....Double CHECK each rod is fully inserted in the mounting threads..... then remove the jack and correct the levels etc of the sub-frame by undoing the support nuts whilst holding the rod with a vice grip to prevent rotation.
I feel MUCH safer with this method both for my health and being able to check for pipes/wire connections as I lower the sub-frame.
Note: Not my "invention"....the tip was passed to me by the people on Activa FB Group/ActivaClub.Fr
