Head blowing, PSA 1.6TDI in a MINI

Unread post by Stickyfinger »

Hi Chaps.... I know I know (but it is not mine)

Mate up the hill has a 57 plate Mini ONE with the PSA TDi in it and it is chuffing from the head joint ! (you can see it puffing smoke from the joint)

Any hints and tips/guides for doing the head gasket on these engines ?

Note: he is VERY competent qualified truck mechanic and Land Rover builder.....

Which engine description do PSA (STAVROS) call this engine ?

Would be a DV6 if is the PSA engine.

Not heard of head gasket failure on these. I had head off my wife's 206's DV6 as snapped glow plugs on removal and taking engine out then seemed easier for the required thorough clean required for turbo replacement.

Given your friend's issue I'd guess massive overheating or something to cause that failure?? In which case would think you'd be in warped head or worse still block. So machines of either or both of these a possibility. At which point is it cut your losses and do a complete engine swap?

Be prepared for inlet to be full of muck. Also potential stuck injectors if they are starting to blow by. Took me several hours to extract one on the 206. No special tools but a battle. One of those pneumatic slide hammers for injector removal looks like a bargain regardless of its cost!

Nothing especially difficult with the head off job, but was glad to be doing it with engine out of the car. Don't imagine access is any better on a Mini than a 206 and leaning over the 'bay to do all that wouldn't be fun.

No over-heating what so ever....just a "chuffing" from the joint (back of engine)....no oil in water.

I think the 110 was reserved for the Cooper version, but beyond that I don't know if the ONE was the 92 or 75 sorry.

Wonder what's caused the failure if not an overheating event. Strange! Sorry am no more help.

If it's not mixing oil or overheating, I would suggest it's not a head gasket problem, but more likely EGR or the pipe joint from the EGR cooler which is down the back of the DV6....
Has anyone seen the plot? :?
