C4 gearbox explosion

Unread post by Orbit Motors »

Just for amusement...

Now, when Citroën designed and named the C4, I didn't realise that meant they actually placed some C4 inside the gearbox to trigger an explosion

Picked up a 2006 coupe at the auctions before Christmas, knowing there was probably going to be a big outlay to get it up to a point where I could sell it on, but wow, I did not expect the box to look like this:

Not quite sure how that massive hole occurred, that would be a question for its previous owner, but thankfully a refurbished box from a place I know was only £380. Think this one is bin fodder...
Cheers,
Miles

Satisfaction guaranteed or your dent back!
If it just about starts and drives, I'll probably buy it.

Looks like the diff made a largely successful bid for freedom! The planet gears are now in orbit...

Sorry... Couldn't resist...

Some PSA 'boxes do have a bit of a reputation for doing that, especially if the engine has been tuned up a bit... There are instances where the 'box is near the limit in its application... the Xantia HDi 90 was a good case in point... It had the BE3 but the Xantia 110HDi had the beefier ML5 'box...

Similarly, the XUD 1.9TD engined cars had the BE3 whilst the XUD 2.1TD cars had the ML5...

A 'hot' AX can detach the diff crownwheel pinion if sufficiently provoked. It just then spins uselessly around...

Happened with my BX. Couldn't say what the box type was.
Ascending a long ramp there was a loud bang but nothing else.
Parked, went into Asda, came out and saw fluid under the car and presumed an LHM leak.
Checked the LHM and it was OK. Started the car and it rose as it should, drove home, called a local Citroen specialist and he had me take it down the next morning, about an eight mile drive.
The sun gear had broken and smashed a hole in the side of the box, the fluid was the gearbox oil.
I was amazed that there was nothing to indicate a gearbox problem.
He stuck a replacement second-hand gearbox in that he had in his garage and all was fine.
Until the head gasket went while my daughter had the car at the other side of the country :(

That would have been a BE3 Steve...
