C3 Hdi glow plugs

Is it true that you can hardly see the glow plug timer light up in this weather? Just acquired a 3yr car and I can't see the timer light up. Car does start ok. Do they use different type plugs and controller?
I can't even detect any battery drain that would normally be caused by the heavy current needed for a glow plug. New technology?

As its direct injection does it need to be heated under normal conditions?

An Hdi shouldn't need to use its glowplugs at all above 18C, so its normal not to see the light come on in this weather.
