A general quiz question which I came across:

Most people can name the first pilots to cross the English Channel and the Atlantic Ocean but can you name the first person to fly around the world alone and how long did it take?

Interesting. They helped to develope pressurised air suits and the discovery of the jet stream.
See, I do read these posts even when I don't reply and I do enjoy the facts it throws up.

Wiley Post, in under 8 days. I had to Google it, but the name came back to mind (as I used to have a book about airmen, and his flying career had its' own chapter). He was nicknamed "The Flying Redskin", as he was of the Cherokee Nation.

My first thought:

THis is how my thinking went. Its a quiz question the answer may not be something obvious like the name of a particular aviator. So went on a tangent...wonder if the command module pilot on the apollo missions did it, then what about Uri Gagarin...first man in space and yes he did go round the world, alone and it took 108 minutes.

Going to look pretty silly now if it was an aviator but none of them would have flown round the world, they would have touched down at many points.

So I am sticking with Gagarin

An interesting line of thought there Neil. I know what you mean by a 'quiz question' - all sometimes is not as it appears! However in this case the answer on the card was the one James put up from his research!!

I have just ordered (from Amazon) the book "3 Great Air Stories". The first 'book' is "Reach for the Sky" (the story of Douglas Badar), the second 'book' is "Skymen (all about various pilots, including Wiley Post), and the third 'book' is "The Man in the Hot Seat", all about the development of the Martin Baker ejector seats, written by Doddy Hay (who was a major player in their development). I lost my previous copy over 20 years ago. It is worth keeping your eyes open for this book, as the individual books are somewhat more expensive ("The Man in the Hot Seat" starts at £45, and goes up almost as high as the ejector seats!).

My first thought:

My first thought on seeing that picture was wrong!! I thought that was an English lass who we lost over the Thames Estuary but as soon as I looked her up I realised my mistake and then followed my second, and correct, thought about the American girl in the picture. As far as I have read, while she flew solo across the Atlantic and my first idea flew to Australia, neither of them flew around the world in one trip.

As an aside on the "ejector seat" and a bit of trivia in relation to "records". I didn't realise Uri Gagarin did not land in his "spaceship", but was ejected at 20,000 feet.

Everyone will be pretty familiar with the 12 Days of Christmas and the various gifts on each day. In total of course 364 gifts were given...

Did the FCF mathematicians let me get away with that statement.
I have tried, but found it a very difficult task to do the calculations via mental arithmetic to either confirm or deny the validity of 364 with no paper/pencil, no spreadsheet, no writing down whatsoever. Not done it yet!

Mental Arithmetic exercise
Time yourself and show your workings by coming up with
1. How many gift in total were given
2. How many gifts were given up to and including day 3, day 6 and day 9.
No writing down anything, no keyboarding anything...you know what I mean, not even those interim "answers" at day 3, day 6 and day 9

After successfully completing the task with Mental Arithmetic the icing on the cake would be to provide a graphic presentation of pleasing artistry, and maybe even a formula which works out the sequence not just for 12 but any numbers of days of Christmas.

Here's hoping the question finds some answerers...
