106 Erratic Idle and trouble starting

Hi,
I have a pug 106 xs, and recently I am having trouble getting it started. The engine is turning over fine, but it just wont fire up!
Ocassionally as im trying to get it started it will smell of fuel a little!
The revs also keep going crazy when idling!, they will shoot up to about 2300 revs, and then fall back down to around 1000.
These faults are both intermittant at the moment, but are gradually getting worse!
I have checked the engine for any leaks, and have found none! I have just changed all the oil and filter, and the air filter.
I have it booked in at Peugeot next week, but dont really want toi pay their prices?
Any suggestions please!?!

look for a split in the fuel lines, get somone to turn the ignition while you look for spurting fuel

The problem gets worse when the weather and or engine is hot!!

look at the ones around the fuel filter (mines below the rear driverside door) and the ones that go into the throttle body.
as for the heat........umm..heat will aid an electrical breakdown...

have you changed the plugs/leads etc (all ht stuff) as this sounds like a major breakdown of HT spark. The erratic idling may be being caused by the ECU trying to get the engine to idle, but dramatically overshooting due to the awful spark. For £25 worth of bits, it's worth checking. After all, peugeot want twice that just to look at it and make sharp-intake-of-sucky-breath noises.

Hi, thanks for that, going to check for leaks tonight, and change the leads, Im not sure if i can change the plugs myself, as they look diffcult to reach!

well its not like you have to twist them out by hand. a couple of my zx ones are a right arse to reach as they're under the injection housing!
Also check the Distibutor cap and clean up any deposits that might be on the contacts. the smell of fuel could be because unburnt as there is no spark.

with my 106, you have to remove loads to get to the plugs, so while im doing that i will everything a good clean. where is the distributer cap?

mine dont have a distributor cap, it has the dreaded sagem coil! replaced it the other day, made no diffrence.

aha like mine! is it the TU engine (i think thats what mine is)? do you have the old coil still? as mine seems to have an sparking problem, nothing like your mind you

yeah, i still have the old coil, not sure if mine is the tu engine! its a 1.6 i know that much!

humm dont know. probably worth me getting a new one anyway but GSF still want around £50 for it

the probem with that is that you never know whether that one has the same problem, so does the change of coil pack mean that there wasnt a problem with the old one, or that is there a problem with the "new" one?? without a brand new one who knows.
