I'm wanting to wire in to the electrics for my newly-fitted towbar. The lights on this model (my car, although it says 'Picasso' on the back, has 'Spacetourer' in the logbook) are in the lift-up bootlid. So I am guessing there must be some point elsewhere in the car that is the starting point. Youtube also made me think twice, because you see lots of warnings about doing a simple connect to the rear lights / brake lights / indicators and mention of canbus, whatever that is.
Any advice, please? BTW, the trailer was bought new last week, already wired up (7-pin) at the factory.

It's best really to use a dedicated wiring kit, this will plug in to the car - although the plug is behind the glovebox (on a RHD car). This will make sure no errors on the car from stray currents, cut the parking sensors when towing, and adjust the ESP program to reflect the trailer. They are a bit more pricey, and involves dismantling half the car, but easier than tracing all the wires!

Thanks RichardW but I am a bit upset at what would seem to be instore for me if I try to fit the electrics myself.
I bought the towbar from Poland (remember, I live in France, so no stupid customs to have to pay) at €112 and fitted it myself without any need to take the bumper off. Just the black bottom section with the close approach detectors was all that had to come off.
I didn't buy the electric kit from the towbar supplier (extra €55), because I was pretty sure it is not a legal requirement here for trailers up to a certain weight ...... and mine is under that weight. Now I am assured by british 'experts' here that it is, hence my original posting.
This certainly looks daunting, I'll look more deeply into the legalities of + or - electrics. I can't imagine ever having to take the trailer out in fog or when it's dark or gloomy and the car's lights are easily visible above the trailer for indicators / brake lights....

You need lights on a trailer in France irrespective of whether or not it's below or above the 750kg threshold. The only difference with having a trailer above 750kg is that it needs it's own logbook. With modern electrics in cars I would advise getting a plug and play wiring harness. We're not in the age of scotchlocks any more unfortunately.
