DPF cleaning and refitting 1.6 HDi

Unread post by Dav03k »

I have been researching on the internet for a while now and noticed that the DPF of a 1.6 HDi engine should be renewed after 125.000km if I am not mistaken. My C5 II from 2005 has done more than 150.000km now, had its glow plugs, EGR and of course, its turbocharger replaced. I am planning now to undertake a deep cleaning procedure on the DPF soon, but I do not know how the ECU of the car will react as soon as the cleaned DPF is put in. I have read that most modern cars' ECU has to be told, that a "new" filter has been put in.
Today I found a menu in Lexia that would have told me if I would need to renew my DPF at all, but unfortunately this function only works with cars newer than 2009. So I began to wonder, does my C5 need a recalibration after the clean DPF has been put in, or is it indifferent whether or not the dpf is new or old, since the car would not know?

The Engine ECU does need to be told. The Menu in the Lexia will be under replacement parts and this is where you are effectively telling the engine ECU that you have replaced the DPF (even though you are just cleaning it). If you fail to do this the engine ECU will start flagging warnings at some point if it is not already doing so.

There are impurities that cannot be burned off during regeneration and one of these is the Cerine in the additive. It is measured in weight (grammes) and the engine ECU keeps a record of this as Eolys is injected into the fuel system over the years. When it reaches a certain estimated weight it will likely start flagging up a warning.

Thank you for your quick reply. The thing is that I did search for that menu under replacement parts today and did not find it. I will look into it tomorrow.

If not there, run the full diagnostic then access the engine ECU from the list, and from there, you may also find related operations.

In the engine ECU and standard parameters, you should be able to see additive in the DPF and remaining life. They usually go a bit more than 160k km, and even if it says it needs replacing you can tell it has been and as long as the pressures are OK it will go another 80k km or so.

My search was successful today. I found the option to tell the car of the replacemnt of the DPF. I had to run a full diagnostic, as Marc suggested. The option is found here : Diagnosis/Global Test/Injection/Special operation for maintenance and part replacement/Particle filter and diesel additive maintenance/Particulate filter replacement.
Thank you all for the great advice. This forum has proven itself to be utterly helpful again.

If anybody would like to know how I am planning to clean the DPF, I found a gentleman on YouTube who explained the procedure very well. The link to the video is found here:

Do we know at what weight in grams does it start acting up?
