Relay DW10FUD engine overheated

Unread post by Rudethenude66 »

Hi, newbie here 👋🏻 I’m having problems with my relay 2017 2.0 Euro 6 engine.
It started a few weeks ago when I stopped engine I could here bubbling, gurgling and banging coming from under the bonnet, I never took much notice at the time but a week later I was on a 2hour drive when I noticed temperature shot up into the red so stopped straight away to let it cool down. I checked it for leaks and topped it up with water to get me home where I refilled with coolant/antifreeze but still seems to have airlock as no heat in cab now. I’ve researched that it could be water pump or thermostat! Does anyone have any idea before I strip it down as thermostat is £165 and water pump kit £120-£210. ? Thank you.

Hi, and :welc: to the Forum. I personally cannot offer any direct advise, but Forum Moderators can. They will ask for the vehicle VIN (to make sure they get the right vehicle), and it is safe to post it on the forum, as there is software that will obscure it from being read by anybody other than them (like this; VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] ).

The plastic impeller will be slipping on the shaft of the water pump. Well known problem on this engine, I’ve replaced loads of them.
Quick check, top up the coolant & pull off the little return pipe on the reservoir, get somone to rev the engine & there should be a steady flow of coolant coming out the return pipe, if nothing coming out suspect the water pump has failed.

Ok great thank you, yes I’ve read that’s a common fault. I will check it tomorrow when I find someone to rev it for me.
Also is there a decent make of water pump to buy or are they all about the same?

I’ve pulled the small pipe off, revved engine and nothing so yes looks like failed water pump.

I’ve looked up water pump kits and seen the makes Gates, Quinton and Hazel, Febi?? Or is there a better one to go for?
Also do you know if the thermostat is replaceable or is it a sealed unit?

All three are well known, reliable names, and should provide good service.

The thermostat is electronically controlled, is a complete housing and around £300 from the dealer.
Because of this you also need to use a diagnostic tool to bleed the cooling system properly after you drain it.

Ok great thanks for that, I’m going to start stripping it down tomorrow and I’ll probably order the gates kit as seems to have better reviews.
