C2 VTR Cruise Control problem

Unread post by larkspeed »

Sometimes my cruise control will not engage.

As in I switch it to on and get no reaction, no activation sound and the buttons no nothing.

It seems to be random, sometimes it will work just fine but then on another trip I just can't get it to switch on.

I have already checked and cleaned the button on the steering wheel and that has made no difference.

Does anyone here have any ideas?

I will add that I just replaced the brake light switch as it seems to be a common cruise control fault and it's cheap but it made no difference

The usual suspect are the switches on the steering wheel. Even cleaning them might not work.
If you have a manual transmission it might be the clutch switch, that's up on the top of the peddle box.
Unfortunately you really need LEXIA or diagbox to see which of the switches are working correctly and which are not.

Is it possible to replace these switches without removing the steering wheel or airbag?

If its the early type that are on the actual steering wheel you dont have to remove the steering wheel but you do need to remove the airbag.

Looks like they are no longer available from the dealers now anyway.

I think pre-2006 C2's used a mix of VAN-BUS and CAN-BUS which might (?) explain why older ones use a switch on the steering wheel rather than the COM2000 stalk we're more used to.

The Peugeot 1007 uses the same switch, so that might allow you to widen your search for a second-hand one (4112HG I believe).

Hopefully, it will just be a switch problem but like ozvtr wrote you need to get Lexia on it

More info here (I think the person is an FCFer...the name rings a bell):

Um. No disrespect, but how did you "check and clean the button" without removing the switches and consequently the air bag? You would have seen that there is a 3 pin connector under the airbag, connecting the two sets of switches and the horn to the clock spring of the COMs unit. Sorry if I misunderstood. It is possible to pull the switches apart and clean the contacts. Again the usual suspect is the sliding contacts of the "on/off" switch. The other three switches are self contained PCB mounted switches that cant be cleaned, only replaced. However the plastic of the switches is VERY brittle and it's possible to break the tabs!
You do not need to remove the steering wheel but you do need to remove the airbag.

There should be 2 part numbers for the switches. An old number and an updated number. Are you searching for the updated number?

Just a bit of trivia here but there are tracks on the PCB of the cruise control switches which indicate that the switches were designed to light up!! But there is no "lighting" conductor in the clock spring to allow it. Or perhaps, like the window switches, they were supposed to light up all the time? There is 5V but there is no ground.

I want to thank you for your help.

I managed to find someone on facebook marketplace selling a C2 steering wheel that had the cruise switches on it.

Picked it up for 30 Euro and it took all of 10 minutes to swap out the steering wheels and now the cruise works perfectly.

I managed to pull the cover off the on/off switch side with a spudger without removing the wheel or airbag or breaking it and cleaned the contacts and put it back together.

I have now replaced the steering wheel with a second hand one and everything works again.
