Citroen C5 (X7) auxiliary heater

Unread post by helltourist »

Hi,

I've installed a Citroen/Webasto Thermo Top Evo auxiliary heater (9687946580) in my car, which was factory fitted in another Citroen C5 (X7) from the same year (2012), same engine (DW12C) and it was previously checked, so it had no problems.
I already had the original wiring in place, so I just had to install the heater and the fuel pump.
VIN: VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff]

At first everything was looking good as I got no errors with Diagbox and I could start the Webasto heater and run the tests, but the problem is if the wire that goes to the engine control unit is connected, then the Webasto heater starts immediately even if the car is locked.
So I disconnected that wire just to finish what I could and installed a Webasto Thermo Call GSM module which can start the heater and there are still no error codes in Diagbox.
It should start the climate control panel to change the passenger compartment temperature, but it's not working (but I don't know if there is some kind of temperature limit or anything that prevents this).

I suspect that the problem is with the Diagbox settings as I don't know exactly what should be selected.
  • At the "BSI > Driving Comfort" section the additional heating has already had the "Heating resistors 1000W" option selected, so I changed this, but there are two relevant options:
    • Programmable Boiler
    • Autonomous boiler
Also there are two other Yes/No settings in this section:
    • Presence of a Thermal Combustion strategy when the engine is cold, to speed up the heating of the passenger compartment
    • Presence of thermal preconditioning in second fit
  • At the "Enigne management ECU" (EDC17CP42) section the additional heating has four options:
    • No additional heating
    • Rods and plugs controlled by the BSI and operated by the engine management ECU
    • Burner controlled by the built-in systems interface and piloted by the engine management ECU
    • Not configurable: sensor managed by the built-in systems interface
So what settings would be the correct ones and could there be any other sections where I need to change something?
If anyone has a factory fitted additional heater in their car and could check these options in Diagbox or just knows how these should look, then please share it, because this way one wire is disconnected and only the coolant heats up if I start it remotely.

Thanks

I havent tried it myself, but here's how i set it:

In BSI:

Heating resistors 1000W = on/yes (this is the electric heater)

Set it to programmable boiler (since you are fitting GSM start) , Autonomous is when the webasto is only controlled by outside and engine coolant temp.

I'd set thermal strategy to yes, preferrable when it gets cold.
Since this is a factory fitted system you have fitted i deem it not being "second fit".
Second fit = aftermarket install of webasto

In the engine ECU i am more unsure.

But my best bet is *Burner controlled by the built-in systems interface and piloted by the engine management ECU
I have various repair handbooks and wiring diagrams for C5 mk1, Xantia, XM, Berlingo and C3 mk1.
I have Lexia/Diagbox (Sweden) and Servicebox/sedre

Thanks for your help.
The heating resistors option is in the dropdown list where you can only choose just one, so only the heating resistors 300/600/1000W or only the programmable or the autonomous boiler.

As you suggested I tried to set to this exact programmable boiler option.
The thermal strategy is set to yes. (Is this the option for the passenger compartment heating?)
The second fit thing is set to no.

In the ECU settings the burner controlled by the BSI option is set.

Sadly, the results are the same, so if I reconnect the original wire that goes to the ECU, then the heater starts immediately even if the engine is not running, so maybe there are still other options to set? But where?
By the way I thought that the heater only starts together with the engine to help reach the optimum temperature and then stop automatically or I can start it remotely when the engine is not running.

The other thing is, could there be some temperature limitation on the passenger compartment heating? Because after starting the heater remotely and waiting for 5 minutes, nothing happens with the climate control panel.

Thermal strategy is the the dieselheater/Webasto starts automatically when the outside temperature is below 5*c and engine coolant is below 70 degrees.

Yes you can start the heater remotely, either via timer panel inside the car, remote/key fob or GSM start

What happens when you set it to "Not configurable: sensor managed by the built-in systems interface?

Yes, starting the Webasto heater remotely is working, but there is no blowing air inside the car and the climate control panel is not turning on at all during the entire heating process.
This is why I'm asking if there are any rules for outside/inside temperature or anything, so I can assume that it would work when it gets colder and it's not a problem.

About the ECU settings, I tried all the four additional heating options in the Engine management ECU section and each time if I reconnect the wire to the ECU, the Webasto heater starts immediately.

Hello,

Did you solved this?
My webasto thermo top v works fine as parking heater, but is no air blowing inside.
Winter is coming....

Not sure they are meant to operate the blowers inside??
As far as i know the thermo tops only pre heat the engine coolant meaning as soon as you get in the car you get instant heat as soon as you turn the heaters on. Airtops only heat air & these have their own internal blowers for pushing out hot air. I don’t believe PSA ever factory fitted air tops, only the thermo top coolant heaters.
I would think if they could operate the cars blowers they would deplete the car battery very quickly.

Yea, not the case. Mine is 2010 factory fitted with remote fob. At the beginning it was heating only the coolant and not the passenger compartment. I enabled it with the ” Presence of a Thermal Combustion strategy when the engine is cold, to speed up the heating of the passenger compartment” option in DiagBox and every morning my car is nice and warmy inside. My battery is just fine as i run the heater for about 25-30 min before i get to the car. And im in Sweden so cold winters here.

Strangely enough, my Battery Charge status unit was not working till recently. I changed it with another one and still didnt work. So i just left it like that, giving the scepter to the BSI. Did gearbox change at the beginning of the summer and had to remove the plastic basket that hold the BSI and the BMI or whatever is called, and i found the fuse for the battery charge status unit under the basket, blown off. Change it, returned the control to the unit, and the heater stopped working. Activating it with the remote fob activates only the passenger compartment blower and not the heater itself. Just tonight i returned the control back to the BSI and now the heater is working fine. Idk if this relate, but its a useful info.

Im also interested in the gsm module, can you provide some info on it?

Hmmm, i enabled combustion thermal strategy in diagbox and i still have no blowing air inside.
Webasto starts perfectly, water hoses are hot after 20minutes....should i see any info on climatronic panel when blower works? Is any info on panel inside?
I will try to check all fuses under bonnet near battery like u did.

How about feeding your start switch from the blower supply, that only becomes live when the engine is running.

But the point is to preheat engine and passenger cabin simultaneously with no engine running.

I don't know if this will help after 2 years, but a symptom of webasto turning on after the ignition is turned off is the connection of the BCP relay module next to the battery. The BCP relay module is responsible for supplying power to the electric heater.

I noticed that the blower fan turns on every time after disconnecting the battery for a few moments and then turning on the webasto. The problem is that despite the control from the webasto, the blower does not start. Either the operating strategy in the BSI is incorrectly programmed, or the air conditioning panel, despite receiving information from the BSI about turning on the blower, does not do so.

Bit of a necro of the thread, but I think it might be useful for anyone with aux heater problems (specifically the heating of the inside of the cabin). I had a problem with the aux heater starting and running, but it never got warm inside the cabin (the fans didn't run). The problem fixed itself when I changed the Battery Charge Status Unit (i.e the one that sits on the battery). It makes sense since the car can't risk getting a flat battery by having the cabin fans running.
Now the cabin is nice and warm during winter. :)

Hopefully this helps someone in the future.

The main fans will only work when the engine is running, it requires a pre determined battery voltage to run them which you only get with the engine running.
