Hi
So I have peugeot 307 year 2002 automatic petrol. It gives me this error "automatic gear fault" and general code reader gives info "oil pressure regulation"
Then I changed oil and the two main solenoid valves. Old ones had white connector and new ones had black. And the same error occurs and car goes limp mode.
I read that transmission ecu needs to be update but problem is that it seems nobody can update it. And will that update solve the problem? Can I somehow update on my own.
Or is it possible that I swap trans. Ecu from never car?
Many thanks

Re: 307 / AL4 problem
Hi and welcome to the forum
Yes, after a swap of solenoids the transmission must be reinitialised and this can, I believe, only be carried out using proper Peugeot/Citroen Lexia diagnostics...
The procedure itself is very straightforward... A garage may be willing to do it but you may find it cheaper and easier to acquire the necessary diagnostic equipment yourself as it will be useful way beyond just resolving this issue..
Look in the Diagnostics area of this forum for guidance on acquiring and using the Lexia system...
Hope that helps...

Re: 307 / AL4 problem
Jim, in the case of the AL4, the updated solenoids have different characteristics and an updated firmware must be flashed to the ECU.
This can be done offline by the Peugeot Planet/Diagbox software, or a Peugeot dealer should be able to do it. If you can find a second hand ECU which has already got the newer firmware, you can fit that, as they are not paired to the specific car, but the firmware may be specific to the model and engine type.

Ahh, sorry Mike and OP for leading you astray wilt duff information, I was thinking it was like an HP20 in that respect...xantia_v6 wrote: 29 Oct 2022, 19:32 Jim, in the case of the AL4, the updated solenoids have different characteristics and an updated firmware must be flashed to the ECU.
Definitely best to have your ECU flashed as trying to find a compatible one from another vehicle could be a veritable minefield... It certainly was with the HP20 where there were so many gearing options available and each needing a compatible ECU...
For Peugeot Planet read Lexia. My last Lexia - now long gone - had both Citroen Lexia and Peugeot Planet software supplied with it and I'd think/hope that would still be the case...

Re: 307 / AL4 problem
You will also need to update the engine ECU firmware if you update the gearbox ECU firmware, but read on before you get too excited.
You should ascertain the current gearbox ECU firmware revision number first. Early revisions of the firmware were still capable of running both the "white" and "black" style electrovalves. If Wheeler reads this he might chime in with the revision number, I cant remember it off the top of my head.
The reason is that, the problem might not be the valves, it might be the pressure sensor. A bung sensor will also give bad pressure readings. So it's possible that you could update the firmware but the gearbox still doesn't work properly.
I have a 2003 Citroen C3 that had "white" valves and this revision number. I swapped out the valves for the "black" valves, with no firmware update and the gearbox runs fine. So I can attest to the validity of that. However yours is a 2002 model and may run an earlier revision number. Remember it's that revision...or later (a bigger number) to run the black valves. If Wheeler doesn't turn up, I'll try and get the revision number for you.
If you get to the point that your car is hooked up to a LEXIA, for any reason, you should update the firmware anyway!

Re: 307 / AL4 problem
Yes, you may already have the later version as it was backwards compatible with the older solenoids.
This thread may be worth a read, It's for a C3 but should be almost identical > viewtopic.php?t=69855&hilit=AL4+software

Re: 307 / AL4 problem
I give you more info if its helpful... so i tried to drive manual gears and I was able to drive all gears 1-2-3-4. Soon as I stopped and changed to D and give littlebit gas it goes to limp mode. And oil pressure was changing 2.9-3.10bar at N gear. Should be 2.7bar?
And reading your posts I think I need to get that lexia...or replace oil pressure sensor is it that which is link below

Okay now I have the latest software which cost me 150e and problem is still on.
Transmission works fine when its cold but after oil warm up it goes to limp mode and still fault is something to do with oil pressure...what is next step to go
Thanks

Re: 307 / AL4 problem
What mileage has the car (box) done? Is the transmission fluid still the original fill?

About 250 000km transmission fluid have been changed at least one time earlierPaul-R wrote: 16 Nov 2022, 18:40 What mileage has the car (box) done? Is the transmission fluid still the original fill?

Re: 307 / AL4 problem
That's an astronomical mileage! The 'box is well past its designated service life and I'd say it was well due for a full overhaul...
That it's fine when cold and the fault of low oil pressure develops when hot I'd say the oil pump is worn. Worn oil pumps will often appear to work when the ATF is cold and more viscous (thick) but when it thins as it gets hot the pump can no longer pump effectively.
Also, I believe the AL4 may have some pressure lubricated plain bearings. If these are worn then they can cause a loss of oil pressure when the ATF is hot.
Well-worn engines often exhibit similar symptoms - good oil pressure when cold but poor when hot. A combination of worn oil pump and bearings...
