Sloppysod: Yes, understand about the bigger diameter, I've no direct experience of the spiral wrap - I assumed it would be possible to wrapped it round something larger diameter (expand the helix so to speak) - but looking again, maybe it's a different product I am thinking of.

Elkc5: Yes, self amalgamating tape is good stuff, again I wonder about its max in service temperature, but worth a shot.

The standard expandable mesh stuff does suggest it was a known issue, but it was ground away like the hose was too.

So I go back to my point earlier - prevention better than cure, so keep heat shield and hose from contact seems the ideal fix

I've seen a high temp wrap for use on exhaust manifolds etc but that's probably overkill for this application
