C8 Manual to Auto

Unread post by manafas »

Hello
Has anyone ever converted a C8 2.0 HDI from 6 speed manual to the auto gearbox?
Is it even worth considering such thing?
What about buying a 2.2 HDI engine with auto gearbox and changing both?
Many thanks
Pedro

Not worth it IMO. There are far more interventions needed apart from changing the gearbox, removing clutch, flywheel, pedals and all the other gubbins. Then there's the instrument panel, fascia, and the engine ECU programming, ABS / ESP ECU programming, specific wiring harnesses and switches, the gearbox ECU harness and the wiring into the engine ECU, plus the fuse boxes etc. etc.
Please note, I'm no longer active on the Forum, so won't respond to messages.

Why change from manual to auto? It will be sluggish up hill either way.

Done it the other way round with a Hillman easydrive automatic, auto to manual with all the parts sourced from a breaker's yard.

Blimy Gibbo now there is a blast from the past. Brings back memories for me as I was a Rootes apprentice in the early 60`s.
If I remember there was about six wires going to the engine and box. A bit different from today's models with a massive wiring loom, multitude of sensors, ECU`s, BSI, WC and chain.

The only way i would even consider attempting this is if i had the complete other donor vehicle that the box was coming from, you will constantly be finding tings you hadn't thought of or realized you would need.

From what I can see, I'm probably the closest, and again going the other way: auto to manual:

2000 Peugeot 406 Coupe, 2.0 EW10J4 petrol was AL4 automatic, converted to BE4 5 speed manual.

This isn't a multiplex vehicle. Was a separate ECU for the auto gearbox and I was fortunate that minimal wiring changes were necessary (disable starter inhibition relay and link reversing light circuit to the manual gearbox's reverse light switch - a signal from the ECU on auto)

Agree with all the points raised above - really not worth considering and a big undertaking.
