C5 Suspension Pump swap-out?

Unread post by FERMANAGHMAN »

Hi, I'm new to this forum as I have only recently discovered the joys of driving a C5 Exclusive! I now have a problem that may have already been discussed; if so, fogive me. My Hydractive Suspension pump has packed up. She is a 2008 Mklll and I am having difficulty getting a s/hand replacement. I can get the earlier (Mkll) pump and so wondering if it will still work OK...if I just change over the ECU and used my existing ECU? Thanks in advance Geoff H

I recently had the pump on my C5 fail. The most common reason for this is that the carbon dust (from the brushes) have mixed with LDS (that has got into the motor from leakage/spillage), formed a conductive paste, and has blown the 40A Maxi fuse. It is possible to remove the pump/motor assembly, dismantle the motor (you don't need to remove the pump from the motor), clean it out using brake cleaning fluid, re-assemble it, replace the fuse (do this last, to prevent it blowing before the motor has been dealt with), and get it working. This is my thread of what happened to my C5, with links from other Forum members that helped me deal with the issue;

Oh, :welc: to the Forum, by the way.

Many thanks Hell Razor5543; much appreciated. Yes, it did blow the fuse. My mechanic put in a new one but when it started up there was smoke coming from the pump and it blew the new fuse. He says he's looked at the pump and frankly too bad gone to clean up. Hence the search for a replacement pump - but as my post says, MKlll pumps are dificult to find but I have seen a couple of decent clean earlier ones. Oh, and thanks for the welcome!

If your mechanic had a look at the pump there will be a label (probably on the large black square unit, which has a complex connector) that will have a part number that should begin with 96. This is the correct part number for that unit (although a Moderator can get you the correct part number). If you can get a replacement motor/pump assembly make sure you get it cleaned up first before fitting it. There are different power connectors across the range of motors, so you need to get the right type.

I had to get a replacement unit for my C5, and fortunately there was a saloon C5 of similar age/spec to my estate C5 (so the pump/motor was compatible). As the 'management' is done via that complex connector module I transferred that across (once I had cleaned out the replacement motor), and eventually got it running. I had to take the assembly off the scrap C5 (as the scrap yard did not provide that service), but it only cost me £30 (and around £75 for the LDS!).
