Cert. of conformity issues

Unread post by C3PO »

Hi, I’m importing a 2006 C3 and the V5 application is asking for ‘Type’ not type approval, I have that. Any ideas guys? Numbers? Letters? Both? Thanks in advance. Don’t have a cert. of conformity, price of getting one would be about half the cars value.

I don't think there's any way around that! You need a CoC:
What is a CoC?
A Certificate of Conformity (CoC) is granted to a product that has met the regulatory, technical and safety requirements required of The Type Approval process.

The Driver Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) will normally require a CoC before a vehicle can be registered in the UK. A CoC is required before an application under the Mutual recognition scheme can be accepted. Note that for Vans and Light Goods Vehicles, partial – incomplete (Stage 1 only) CoCs cannot be accepted.

To obtain an original duplicate of the CoC, you will need to contact the manufacturer direct (not the dealer), who may charge for this service. Important note: VCA do not hold, and are therefore not able to provide CoCs.
So it depends what they mean by "normally" in the above statement from:

https://www.vehicle-certification-agenc ... 20accepted.

Type is most likely M1 (passenger vehicle) aka vehicle category.

If you're importing from an EU country it should be on the existing registration document?

That will vary from vehicle to vehicle, mine states just '2'. This field is different to Type Approval.

Just a thought, and aside from the OP's question about vehicle type...do you actually need a certificate of conformity if the type approval number's displayed on the VIN plate?

This page seems to suggest that either one is evidence that the vehicle has gone through the approval process:
https://www.vehicle-certification-agenc ... -approval/
Vehicle Type Approval is the confirmation that production samples of a type of vehicle, vehicle system, component or separate technical unit will meet specified performance standards. It can be demonstrated through type approval markings (‘e’ or ‘E’ marks) applied to products by the manufacturer, and in the case of vehicles approved under the EU Whole Vehicle Type Approval scheme (WVTA), by a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) issued by the manufacturer. In the case of UN International Whole Vehicle Type Approval (IWVTA) a Declaration of Conformity (DoC).

Actually reading this, it would indicate vehicles over 10 years may not need approval....

Mine didn't (I've done 4), although I'm going the other way. I think the key part is K on the log book if I remember correctly, although with the Dispatch I needed one because it's called a Jumpy in Europe. Dave needed one for his C6 coming from France because it was under 10 yo

Same for UK cars coming into Ireland now - import duty and VAT mean it's cheaper to import from Japan than the UK.

That Ireland border stuff is interesting, I watch the TV programmes about the Guarda 'Stop search seize' :)

Never saw it but I can imagine :-D

Spike Milligan's movie 'Puckoon' was the last thing I watched about the border

Never saw that one, thought I'd seen most of Spike's stuff. :)

The Stop search seize programme shows the Garda checking cars at the border and taxing them on the spot or impounding them if they're registered in the North and owned by Southerners.

On my mother's side my family is from Cork but despite travelling the world I've not been to Ireland Scotland or Cornwall, must make the effort before it's too late. :)

I've come across a few of those checkpoints down here - the cops usually have Customs with them and those guys don't mess around: "Take your personal effects and there's a bus stop half a mile that way..." :rofl2:

Officially they give you 30 days to pay the duties after you import a car (and a bit of leeway after that, probably) so I can't say I've got much sympathy for anyone who's had their car confiscated. They're the ones driving up costs for the rest of us 8-)

It's expensive. Unless you can shack up with family, you could have 3 weeks in Spain for the cost of a week in Ireland (or Scotland) :-D
