Wheel alignment

Unread post by Raul »

2.0 berlingo hdi from 2003. I changed both whisbones due to the bolljoint rubber boot failure and since then the car started to eat the inner side of the left front tyre . I got the wheels aligned in the shop but now it started to eat the inner side of the right front tyre. I just came from MOT and turns out that the rear axle bearings are knackered. I wonder could it be that the shop could not get the wheels aligned correctly because the rear axle was bad while they made the alignment?
My plan now is to rise up the car, center the steering wheel to align the front wheels with a ruler by myself.
Here is one DIY tutorial I quickly found from youtube how to align the wheels:

Of course, any change to the vehicle's suspension geometry, bearings etc., will affect wheel alignment. You really should have all the components checked and replaced where necessary first, then get a proper wheel alignment done - using planks of wood is not going to do you any favours to be honest, so NOT recommended.

The axle specialist( refurbes axles) is on vacation for two weeks. I could not wait that long without some adjustment because the tyre wear is very bad. So I used a very long metallic straight edge( 4m long) which is used on construction. I centered the steering wheel for the start . First thing I noticed that when placeing the straight edge on the rear wheel the straight edge run far away from the front wheel. Then I simply placed the straight edge against the front tyre and against the rear tyre and regulated so that the front tyre was aligned with the straight edge. I did that with the other side as well. I will keep an eye on the tyre wear . If it starts to eat from inside or outside then I will make some additional adjustments.

I've just changed a track rod end, measured the old to new, counted threads etc, it'll be close but it's booked in for tracking. If you're trial and erroring, hope you're using cheap tyres
