Has anyone else heard for the first time the phrase "False Autumn" that's what we are having apparently due to the drought and the heatwave's.

Like that around here, there was lots of rose hips and elderberries but many are depleted now. Plenty of brambles and rasps but one that surprised me was blackcurrants.
Outside the back of the school playing field I recognised a smell, the same as the Coconut and Shea butter shower gel I use, an odd smell that I like but can't place. It is neither of the two components and I have bought coconut oil and Shea butter and blended them but still not the same.
I have encountered it briefly when walking through the woods here but never found a source until yesterday.
Blackcurrant leaves. Not exactly the same but very similar.
Didn't take a camera or phone so Google had no idea where I went yesterday :)

My neighbour's garden is once again strewn with fallen apples from his three trees which year on year are never picked, they just lie there and rot or sometimes the sheep get in and have a few.

Shameful waste :(

was going to buy a sledgehammer to drive posts in for my son's fence that was leaning drunkenly. Never did as his next door neighbour did it instead.
I did try and drive some stakes in to support a low fence of my own and found a hammer with a broken handle that proved to be unmanageable and useless, fortunately my club hammer was OK.
The broken hammer was a sledge, likely one of my dad's, so probably close to 100 years old.
Drove the broken handle out and have ordered a new handle, cleaned the head up and the only information on it is this:
IMG_20220827_110051229_HDR.jpg
I was expecting to see LNER or something similar on it, like many tools inherited from my dad.

Not sure what I will do with it when it is fixed though.

I've got one of those, I used it with home made bracket as a hub puller, nothing it wouldn't shift.
I gave up on the puller and bought a new shaft for it from Jewsons but weighing in at 14 lbs I don't have the muscles left to swing it now. :(

Unimpressive blackberries
DSCF3703.JPG
There are scads of them, this shows only about a quarter of this patch, probably 100 x 50 feet.

It is actually my former place of work.

Nothing but bushes and trees now.
It was a posh new hexagonal building similar to the recently built Sunderland Civic Centre and designed by the same architect.
Twenty of us were made redundant in 1983. The company closed soon after.
Demolished shortly after, vandalised I think.

Went for an afternoon walk and ended up going round that industrial estate, on the footpaths round the back of the factories. Loads of brambles but all very disappointing. Has been too dry for them I expect.
Also found an apple tree.

Ditto for these wild pears. Bit of off-tree ripening in the purple bowl and they will be just right. Very useful as porridge flavour enhancers.

I've got pears, no plums or cherries this year though, Pears have time to fatten up a bit before I pick them.
