Has my timing belt been changed? [-o<

Unread post by Neil830 »

Hello

I recently purchased as 407 sw 2.0 hdi, it’s covered only 146k miles since 2010 when it’s life began.

I know the service book says the belt isn’t due to be changed until 140k. But I’m trying to find out if it’s already been done.

Could someone more in the know look at these pictures to see what they think.

I’m thinking it may have been done as the last few I’ve done have gone shiny on the outside.
This one isn’t and I can still clearly (ish) see the print.

Also on the tensioner there is a circle with a 17 in it. I’m hoping this is a year of manufacture stamp.

I maybe just grasping at straws, I don’t mind doing it but that’s more money that I didn’t really want to spend on it. 🤑

Thanks Neil [-o<

As you have all the covers off, I would put a new belt on for the hell of it. If money is tight and all the pulleys/tensioner feel smooth just do the belt
Thanx to all the admins & knowledgeable people that make this the best forum on the interweb. BUT COME BACK MARC , We miss you! =D> =D> =D>

Thanks for the quick reply Steve.

I’ve only got the top cover off. So not on very far 😂.

The pulleys look all smooth and clean. Better looking than the cam sprocket.

Thanks for reply.

According to the service book the last service was 138k at ATS (it’s done 146k)but that says timing belt not changed on it. The same garage has done nearly all the previous services apart from the last one. I tried ringing them but think they must have gone out of business as number no longer works.

It does seem to have been done every year so hoping ta been done. But I’m no expert. That’s why I thought someone on here would be able to tell me how new the belt looked.

Cheers.

A visual check is not a good indicator of timing belt condition or age. I have replaced many timing belts that have done 100k miles & dont look much different to the day they were fitted. I have seen timing belts snap with what looks like a clean cut but absolutely no signs or wear/damage anywhere else on the belt. At the same time i have replaced timing belts well before their due date/milage that looked like they were hanging on for dear life & even some with missing teeth.

Get it changed and remove the doubt. Leaving it to chance is something you might regret when you're sitting at the side of the road waiting for the recovery truck.

As Gibbo says, fit a new belt kit for peace of mind.

My personal view regarding cam belts is to replace them by 100K no matter what Mr Peugeot says.

Thanks for the reply’s.

It’s a shame garages don’t put a sticker on the cover to say when it was changed. That would be very helpful 😂

Yeh think I might just get it done.

I also need to do the one on my 508 ( same engine) it’s only done 88k but is an 11 plate.
I know that’s not been done as I’ve had it since it was 3.

Thanks for the help.

All the garages I've seen doing cam belts write the mileage and date on the top cambelt cover with a white paint pen.
When zooming in on the photos it does look a little frayed, also it's not sitting central on the sprocket so check the tensioner / idler. For piece of mind I'd change them too along with the water pump. Done for life then probably.

If you decide to get it done look for the dealer Citroen/Peugeot fixed price deals.
