C5 x7 steering rack leak

Post by Dunkah »

Hear we go again…… seems to be quite a bit on this particular issue…..
I have a leak from my steering rack, my mechanic friend and myself resealed the pipes into the rack a couple of times now and it’s still leaking. After a bit of research on the forums it looks like the input shaft seal is a fairly regular problem. I’ve been looking for recon racks and can only find one at nearly £500, I did hear tell on posts from a few years back that people had found them for much less, like £150.
Can’t seem to find any myself…..
I’m not scared of getting my hands dirty and am considering doing the input shaft seal myself. However…… can’t find any shaft seals anywhere.
If anyone has any links to recon racks, or seal kits, or reconditioning services I’d be very grateful indeed.
The car is a 2008 x7 exclusive tourer, hydro suspension with 17” wheels
Many thanks everyone

Have a look from here and the next few pages for measurements and components and what-not.

Thanks for that bobins, very interesting write up there, especially the link to modifying the rack with a gaiter.
I’m now looking into re manufacture racks, which don’t seem too expensive. Might give one of those a go and add a gaiter or boot to it 👍

Just make sure you get the correct one for your vehicle. They have a different steering angle depending on the vehicle / wheel size.
