Diagram request: C5 X7 fuel tank parts

Hi all, I need to lower the diesel tank a bit and before I go at it I was keen to see the components that support it if anyone has access to a diagram showing it all and how many fixings. I was under the car on Saturday but had to stop work after suffering a serious attack of vertigo (something I get on occasion). I need to lower the tank to allow the routing of the one hydraulic front to rear pipe.

I have nothing on replacing the rear suspension pipe unfortunately, but the fuel tank removal procedure is a bit involved and there is nothing useful regarding lowering it - as the operation goes from draining the fuel, disconnecting the pipes and the under rear seat gauge housing etc on a lift, so nothing useful regarding lowering it. There's also the fuel additive tank that will need disconnecting and taking off or you'll risk snapping the connectors.

If it was me I'd get the dealer to do it. I remember having a rear pipe replaced, but it was the one on the bend with a kink that was badly made that was replaced not the front to back.

I will put together the fuel tank removal guide which will take me half an hour or so to compile, then I'll leave a link here for it.

That's brilliant Marc!

Basically I tried to cheat and feed the new pipe over the tank in situ but of course, I paid the price for the corner cutting and the pipe union end has stuck above the tank somewhere (can't go forward or back to remove) I think caught in the existing pipe's plastic guide clips. My thoughts are that I can free it by slightly lowering the tank 10mm or less and not completely lowering it. The pipe is in place from the front, routed all the way down and back but is stuck at the tank. I've coiled the excess ahead of the tank, secured with tie wraps and refitted the plastic undershield to keep the car mobile. I also had to do this because I fell ill during the work so had to wrap it up. Not a great day really. I think the tank can be lowered this small amount without taking any of the parts off the near side (additive tank, exhaust heatshield etc) and leave the pipes connected.. but who knows.

What have done so far with the tank ?

I had to remove the filler spout,fuel tank sender and disconnect the speed sensors. I think the tank was held by 3 or 4 bolts carefully lowered it with my trolley jack. I’m sure I had to support the additive tank. I couldn’t remove the tank completely due in sufficient room.

I haven't done anything with the tank except remove the plastic cover on the off side to reveal the front to rear pipe. I was correct in thinking the 'replacement' pipe the previous owner told me about was actually a replacement section that has a join to the original pipe in the plastic cover. My concern being that the straight join is a compression fitting.

I have looked at the mounting bolts and the larger pair (12. in the diagram in marc's write up) look terribly rusty

I'll be tackling this in the coming weekend probably.

You will be able to lower further but support both tank and additive tank.

Yes my bolts were rusty spray plenty of releasing fluid and leave to soak in but they all release surprisingly easily for me. If I recall one of the bolts (11) which are smaller caused more problems. I think a bolt (12) also secures the additive tank hence the reason for its moving.

Once partially lower you will gain access to the offend pipe and see who it runs over the fuel tank.

Are you aware the fuel tanks is made from polyethylene probably HDPE which is resistant to oils etc.

I didn't know that Kenny, surely that also means they're recyclable... same stuff as milk bottles etc.
