Security wheel nut better than OEM?
Hello All
The head of one of the security wheel nut snapped off. Annoying but not a major issue
It was the OEM Citroen wheel nut.
Is there a better quality nut available?

May not apply where you live but I chuck mine away and replace with plain wheel bolts, the security bolts are a nuisance, especially when like yours they break or the key goes into hiding.
No-one bothers to steal wheels around here.

Re: Security wheel nut better than OEM?
I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before, but I fitted a new clutch for one of my lady customers, a couple of days later she was on the phone "That new clutch you fitted is no good, it doesn't work." so off I go up to her place and there her car is with the back wheels missing and it sitting on a couple of the local rocks.
She had come out to go to work sat in and started and of course it didn't move. didn't notice the wheels had gone.

Re: Security wheel nut better than OEM?
Security bolts are only any good if the wheels are likely to be stolen. If you have them keep a welder and bolt handy to get them off if they disfigure.if that doesn't work then it will be a drill out job.

Locking wheel nuts are the work of the devil, as soon as i grt a car with them i remove them & fit regular bolts straight away.
I think the last time heard of someone stealing wheels was around 1999.

Re: Security wheel nut better than OEM?
There have been a spate of wheel thefts recently. It is because of vehicle leasing. When you hand back the vehicle it has to be in pristine condition, otherwise the leasing company will hit you for every penny they can (including hefty labour costs). If people spot their alloy wheels (on the leased vehicle) are damaged they will look to buy a new set from ebay, without worrying where they came from. Meanwhile somebody else comes out to go to work only to find wheels are missing from their car!

Re: Security wheel nut better than OEM?
I have to agree. Newer Diamond-cut alloys for example are expensive to replace and not as easy to repair. My alloys are over £320 each and these are not as big as some other vehicles.
But in any case, some people like to protect them, but want a better solution than the OEM version that have the pins that notoriously break off. The ones I linked to were brilliant, never had an issue and for £24 odd, great value. It has to be a personal choice though.

I'm wondering if this an area thing? Not heard of any wheels being stolen here, apart from Transit spares about 10 years ago

Re: Security wheel nut better than OEM?
I also find locking wheel nuts a pain and replace them with plain ones. My wheels aren't in sufficiently good condition for any one to want to steal them and we live in a very low crime area, although a friend of ours had her number plates stolen as a car similar to hers had been stolen, worth a lot more than mine though. That was the first crime I have heard of in our village for many years.
We have not had anything stolen from our house, which is in out the wilds, in the 52 years we have been here. I think that the criminal fraternity know by now that we don't have anything worth stealing - we also have a large German Shepherd.

Does he have a large flock of German sheep?

Much in the same way as a friend of mine. He has an Old English Sheepdog, and a flock of Old English Sheep!

Re: Security wheel nut better than OEM?
IMHO security nuts for wheels are a pain in the ****, and it's Sod's Law that the only time you'll need to get one off will be at night, in the rain.
First thing when I get a new (to me) car is take them off and chuck them in the bin.

Re: Security wheel nut better than OEM?
I think the topic is moving off the original question asked - not whether they are a good idea or not, but whether there are alternatives to the OEM ones are better or not.
The answer to that question is yes, IMO there are better ones out there:
