C5 MOT fail, some repair advice.

Unread post by seanrx »

Hey all.

Am posting for some repair advice/price check, if my C5 is worth saving.

Some large fails.
Front offside shock with serious fluid leak and excessively corroded brake pipes.

£650, estimate cost of a new shock and fitting. Yikes.
And a few hundred for pipes

That a fair price for the shock? If can be done for less at another location I would still have to transport the car. Am in sunny North Lincolnshire and the car is a 54 5 door petrol.

It's a bugger, as I just fitted new tyres and discs.

Yes, that's about right. I had both front shocks replaced about 4 years ago (not long before I sadly parted with it) and they were over £500 each. If one has gone you might find that the other is not in a good state either.

Once replaced it was super, until the hydraulic pipe burst...

Pipes?
The rear right and left. But i do see that pipes are in sections.

They are 'heavily corroded'. Have already been several advisories for them.

But for pattern parts, they are available to buy?
I've seen complete brake kits for sale and parts from several online dealers.

These are the part numbers for the ones available and the Citroen prices as of today VAT inclusive.

(1) OEM 480697, £24.82
or Cheaper 1623256580, £16.81
(2) Only Cheaper alternative available, Part: 1623256580, £16.81 (same as alternative to (1), but although it may be a different shape it will still fit and is what Citroen bring up).
(7) Set of brake pipes have an alternative indicated:
Left-hand pipe Part: 4888EN, £85.80
Right-hand pipe Part: 4888EP, £ 80.65

I can't advise about the pattern parts, but if you have identified the item number on the diagram for which I haven't provided a part number for you, let me know and you can use this to look for alternative suppliers.

Hi Marc.

Parts 8 & 9, can give me a number please?
I'll return to the MOT garage on Tues to show them this shock and if all okay we can decide on the brakepipes.

On my car, parts 8&9 are'nt so corroded so perhaps can be used again if no choice.

Brake pipes?
I've never known anybody visit a dealership for brake pipes.
I've hardly ever known anybody buy pattern part brake pipes.
Every garage I've ever worked in or dealt with take the old brake pipe off and make a new one to match.
A roll of brake pipe used to be cheap enough and the unions were pennies.

If there are break hoses that are unavalable, it might be a worth while idea to put together some plans for running brake pipe to standard pipe ends, to custom made brake hoses, back to hardpipe. Don't be alarmed by the word custom, we're looking at under £25 per hose from this site:

You beet me to it Lenny, well said.
I retired long ago and still have a flaring tool kit, roll of copper pipe and unions in my tool chest.

Brake pipes.
So, custom pipes were fitted today at the same garage and by the MOT tester who fail my shock!

The garage were quick to do it, great. But I was surprised at who would be fitting them. This happened after my re-test date ( my choice) so to be set for an MOT at different site next week.

And the shock, still looks okay. No 'adjustments'.

Send it back to them, he should of reported any faults he spotted whilst working on the car that should include anything previously spotted. Surely he can't fail it again.

No, he was only working on it, he not re- examine that shock.
Over two weeks since their original MOT fail, so it's just another car to fit brake pipes.

I choose another site for the MOT, they pre-tested it before and see no shock fault.
