That sphere was for a C5 MK II without Hydractive suspension, so is 385 CM3 volume and a 57 BARS pressure sphere. There is not supposed to be any rattling or loose parts inside.

Hard to say, but if the sphere has been previously opened, who knows what has got inside or come loose. I haven't seen a new original that has those metal parts scraped out at the top where the nipple is, so it may be that someone has taken it apart previously.

Ok, so that is not normal at all. These Slimline spheres have 3 spikes built into the top of the sphere as a safety feature. So if the pressure is too high the membrane gets punctured by the spikes to release pressure and help prevent metal shards from an exploding sphere. It may be that one of these spikes has come loose. Either way. I would NOT be putting that on my car.

Just because it's in an original looking box (quite an old and worn box), that does not mean it is new. I'm willing to bet you didn't purchase this from a main dealer as they would not sell new parts that worn and badly packaged.

If you bought on the aftermarket, there is no telling what it's history has been or whether it has been opened, tampered with and re-packaged to look new. Anyway if you bought it from a dealer, you are covered, just return it as being faulty.

Well if it was my car then I wouldn't risk it at all. You could cause a lot of damage if you replaced a sphere with loose bits of metal in and then pressurised it - a quick way to damage the hydraulic system if that gets in it.
