I have just read a post reply from Marc about a front shock absorber for a Citroën C5,

No mention of the age of C5, but are we starting/continuing to see problems getting new parts, that will lead to more cars being scrapped. I thought manufacturers had to supply parts for a least 10 years, and I am sure there is a EU directive about making items easier to repair.

Would it be worth having a locked thread listing all parts, when found, for all Marques that are no longer available? This will also give users an idea of what parts to use really look after. 🤔 Or would this be just toouch work and doubling of information?

One of the reasons I scrapped my C5 was that the rear ram was leaking and there appeared to be no possibility of obtaining a replacement.
Also the steering rack needed replacing or refurbishing and a new clutch and DMF.
Plus a few odds and ends. Total cost was far more than I paid for the Civic. Only thing it has needed in two years (needs, now) is a rear brake disc, pad backing is scraping badly.

Yes, the main reason i got rid of my X7 was due to unavailability of steering hydraulic parts, one of my power steering pipes was NFP before it had even reached 10 years old. I emailed Citroen UK about it & they told me I would just need to use a breakers yard or 'specialist supplier'. When i ask who the specialist suppliers were they told me just to use google to find some. ](*,)

I've heard it's 5 years in some cases for parts availability, but it's quite a cloudy subject by all accounts.

I would have thought the parts would be available somewhere in the aftermarket trade or the new s/abs maker's sites.

I think that the minimum requirement is that at some point after car production ceases, the manufacturer must have a stock of spares for 7 years anticipated usage. This under estimates the demand for parts that typically fail later in the life of the vehicle.

Most Citroëns, especially X7's would not be a good bet for an aftermarket manufacturer, just not enough of them around!

I read a magazine back in the late 1990's, that manufacturers car only really expect trouble free motoring for around 50,000 miles, which makes you realise why new car warranties are so short, unless it's Korean. I still think this is true.

So basically we're doomed! 😳

Feck, I'm still determined to get classic car status, only real hardship is finding a decent breakers yard. If only there was a Citroen breakers we'd all be happy motorists.
