Today's County in the Spotlight:Part 2

One village with an interesting WWII history which I used to travel through often is Warboys:

The village itself has a long history dating back to the Normans which you can read about here.

However personally I think the story of the RAF residency during the Second World War is more interesting and can be found here.

Obviously for the wordsmith the very name RAF Warboys has intrigueing interpretations!!

I tried looking for a Roller including a search for "Queen's Car" (Elizabeth Windsor) to no avail but I have found a poor man's Roller, a Bentley:

The Nene Valley Railway is a gem but it weaves in and out of Huntingdonshire/Northamptonshire but a goodly part of its length is the southern part of Peterborough within Huntingdonshire.

Enough to include this little video on the line, and always nice to see a Spam Can.

Bond fans familiar with Octopussy also get a bit of info from the video...

On to my next randomly selected Huntingdonshire Village Waresley


and St James Church in the village was designed by William Butterfield, a celebrated Gothic Revival church architect, and it contains some fine examples of his work, including "Structural Polychromy" decoration in the chancel of contrasting red, green and yellow tiles. .

Structural Polychromy has me interested but is there an image of it...

I think this is the best on offer, its a striking church inside and out.

Time to finish off Huntingdonshire have been looking for a musical contribution, and Huntingdonshire's nearly famous but not quite musician Terry Reid who wrote stuff for Graham Nash and the Hollies and may well have become part of Led Zeppelin or Deep Purple and did tour as support with the Rolling Stones and Cream. Thing is I cant find any of his stuff that I like!

The closest was probably this he wrote with Graham Nash and performed by CSN&Y.

We kick off with Wemyss Bay Railway Station, a place I wouldn't have known about were it not for Simon Jenkin's book "Britain's 100 Best Railway Stations", one of his favourites and he put it on the cover.

Inside there is another image of the outside and how it connects to the Ferry to Rothesay and the Isle of Bute a hugely popular holiday destination for Glasgow holidaymakers.

"Wemyss Bay was thus an exercise in ergonomic architecture. The challenge was to shift a trainload of passengers from the train to the ferry in just five minutes. They were to pass on foot from the curved platforms down a covered walkway to the pier and the ferries, while their luggage was taken by trolleys by a separate route, as in a modern airport"

What James Miller the Architect and Donald Matheson the Engineer achieved in meeting the specification was "science encased in art" as described by Simon Jenkins.
