We had the HU Neil, first picture in my post! Its the HW that may be missing now you've cracked the HY for certain, it just depends on what you think this bus has:

This was the HU:

This is good enough for me as evidence that the bus is the HW we need: :-D

I think its an "HW" corrected my post but left the Escort in! I know how it happened, the screen was scrolled down to the green bus, when I started marking them off on my back of an envelope list so I only ticked off the 8 :-D

Our man in the "Forest of Dean" needs re-awakening again before the day in the spotlight concludes. I may quote some of his previous contributions on the County. I think he started a thread as to why he took a dislike to the County Town, due to some parking problems :-D

Gibbo's "Don't Go to Gloucester" thread kicked off with this. Nothing to do with the potential attractions or history of the Town, but its traffic management enforcement systems.

Took my old disabled friend to Gloucester for her first outing since the lockdown commenced, parked in the multi story car park, three hour limit for disabled free parking, at three hours she wanted to stop for a Costa coffee so I left her there and moved the car onto the street, reset the time on her card and went back and had a coffee with her, returned to the car s**t! a parking ticket.

There are no signs or yellow lines on the road, it's just a plain tarmacked road, so I see a female traffic warden along the road,

"Did you ticket my car?
"Not me but you can't park there it's pedestrianised."
"There's no indication of that."
"There's sign on a post at the far corner.
" But the lady's disabled and her badge is in full view."
"Disabled badges don't work in pedestrianised areas, you can try to appeal it."

This is getting even spookier, just scanned the rest of the results of my "Bus SHW 818" search and came across this in Berlin, not quite right but uncanny nevertheless: :-D

My personal visits to Gloucestershire were all recorded on the currently inaccessible photos apart from my last visit there during our September Stroll in 2020
Rather than waste space with reproducing the photos here I will just post one to improve this post's presentation! :-D

Some music from Gloucestershire is needed and what better than A Gloucestershire Rhapsody by one of the county's own composers, Ivor Gurney. Accompanied here by some very attractive pictures of places around the county: :-D

Ivor Gurney: A Gloucestershire Rhapsody
Born in the city of Gloucester in 1890, Ivor Gurney was both a poet and musician. As a boy he was a chorister at Gloucester Cathedral, where he studied under the organist, Dr Herbert Brewer. In 1911, he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music to study composition with Sir Charles Stanford but psychological problems led to a breakdown which interrupted his studies. Gurney served with the Gloucestershire Regiment during the First World War, fighting on the Somme, where he was first wounded in the shoulder, then gassed. During his time in the trenches, he wrote a number of songs, and also much fine poetry.
After the war he returned to the Royal College to continue his composition studies, this time with Dr Ralph Vaughan Williams. But his emotional instability remained a problem and he soon withdrew from the college. He continued writing poetry and music, however, and composed the Gloucestershire Rhapsody in 1919-20. Sadly, his psychological condition deteriorated and in 1922 he was committed to a mental institution, first in Gloucester and later in London. He died of tuberculosis on December 26th 1937.

Pub of the day, visited by us, while on a short holiday staying near Stroud in the Slad Valley, setting for "Cider with Rosie", with the gorgeous Painswick not far away.

Great old sign, great history, terrible website, location location location and all it shows is the inside of the pub and a few plates of food. A could be anywhere presentation of the Chef&Brewer Group https://www.chefandbrewer.com/pubs/glou ... ir-balloon

"Gloucestershire pubs" does a far better presentation of it, with some nice historic images, and even a list of landlords :-D The pub has a great location at the top of a hill, but maybe thrives on an escape from traffic jams from the converging roads, and the need a break trade from hot and bothered motorists at the junction of the well used roads.
Image
The pub takes its name from the pioneering balloon flights that took place on the Cotswold escarpment in 1784, just a year after the Montgolfier brothers first took to the air in a balloon in Paris. The pub was known as the Balloon in 1796 and had become the Air Balloon in 1802.

This day just gets spookier by the minute!! Back in the 1980's after we lost our first daughter we considered moving away from Watford to start afresh. We went to view the sub Post Office in Birdlip which was up for sale and I was going to take over the postmaster role while my wife ran the accompanying store. After an extensive viewing of the property in the morning we went for a late lunch at the pub recommended by the then postmaster, The Air Balloon, which was a mile or so up the road! Spooky or what? :-D

I didn't even know that the pub was in Gloucestershire, just had a vague recollection and I like and notice and retain unusual names. There might even have been a ballooning event on probably around 1986 ish when we were there.
Thanks for sharing your memory of it.

The Duke of Gloucester setting off from Bristol Temple Meads Station as it over-dramatically creates its own "steam screen" to emerge through.

Difficult to recognise, but easy to look up, and talked about in the pages of the FCF, currently in the dusty archives of 2019. https://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/ ... 28#p599528
