Re: Today's County in the Spotlight:Part 2
One of the "roots" places is Dalkeith.
Saw a bit of it not visited before, and for the first time in ages took a stroll in Dalkeith Palace Grounds and the high Street, with a nostalgic mooch around the back of the Coach and Horses, still there...not exactly thriving I would say, but still going.
Just across the road behind the High Street...the never knew bit...is a Bentley Specialist with a few other interesting classics lying about.
Just for good measure Dalkeith Palace...Country Seat of the Dukes of Buccleuch
Regards Neil

The ESSO Football Club Badges entries for Edinburgh
If you do one of the finest things to do in Edinburgh and the the short walk up Calton Hill you will see Easter Road Hibs ground. Hearts Tynecastle Ground is up Dalry Road From The Haymarket to the West of the town.

Re: Today's County in the Spotlight:Part 2
I have driven through Midlothian on many occasions but I have only really been there on my four visits to Edinburgh over the years. Unfortunately my photos from all those visits are not accessible to me at the moment but they are mainly of the castle and the views from the castle battlements which can be found all over the web!! So I will simply add this one picture of the Castle armourment which is very similar to a picture I took with my then girlfriend standing in the doorway to the right!!

You have done well Mick, Liked this one...The Cafe at the News Theatre took my eye. I'm sure there were "news Theatres up and down the Country at one time, I just about remember going to one in the town (Newcastle) in the early 60's.

Re: Today's County in the Spotlight:Part 2
Edinburgh is a city I've walked the length and breadth of over many years but my favourite bits are always just a bit away from the busy-ness, and the hassle of driving and parking your car anywhere near the centre. Innerleith Park and the Botanic Gardens, Arthur's Seat and Salisbury crags, Holyrood Park, Water of Leith Walkway, the towpath of the union canal, waterfront at leith, andmaximum reward for minimum effort the walk up Calton Hill and the view. No need for expensive catering, supermarket picnic up on Calton Hill, better view than any fancy restaurant.
A nice area, sometimes busy in itself, is Stockbridge. Certainly passes the cappuccino test.
And what better for such things than an Artisan market and a bit of live music.
Regards Neil

Re: Today's County in the Spotlight:Part 2
I have just looked through the wiki pages for all the places Neil highlighted in the opener to Midlothian and I'm sorry to say I found nothing of any significant interest other than in Edinburgh, which we have already covered, so my last contribution to this county will be some music which I'll post up next!

I've never been to visit the Chapel in Roslin Village Midlothian, nor have read the "Da Vinci Code" but I believe people go there because of the connection.

Re: Today's County in the Spotlight:Part 2
Newtongrange has one of those oddities a Gothenburg Pub aka The Dean Tavern, and a connection with the Scottish wing of the Family.
https://www.deantavern.co.uk/
THE DEAN TAVERN HISTORY
A 'Goth Tavern' dating from 1910 and designed by A Murray Hardie.
It is an example of the 'Gothenburg system' which originated in Sweden in the 1850's, and was introduced to regulate drinking and to reinvest profits in the local community. At the time of survey in 2001, the Dean Tavern continued to have an important role within the village of Newtongrange, despite the cessation of coal mining in the area. It still plays an important role in the Newtongrange community today.

Re: Today's County in the Spotlight:Part 2
Penicuik also has a family connection, and quite a few takeaway suppers from Alans Chinese Restaurant. I like names and "Alans" stands out as not being very Chinese! Think its called something different now.
The Locomotive Built By Hawthorne Leslie Works No 3799 Penicuik 0-4-0ST spent its working life at Alexander Cowan & Sons for use in their private sidings at the paper mill at Valleyfield at Penicuik in Midlothian.
When in service it was painted in a royal blue, in lined livery without any name on the side tank. It was converted from coal to oil-fired traction during its time at Valleyfield.
On closure of the mill the locomotive was bought for a private collection based at Lytham St Annes. At an unknown date the Lytham St Annes collection was broken up and the locomotive was purchased by a member of the Aln Valley Railway who aimed to open a private railway line from Alnwick to the East Coast Main Line at Alnmouth.
Well this may well be it, photographed only yesterday.
Regards Neil
