As boys myself and best mate Peter went to visit his aunt in Mansfield Woodhouse Derbyshire on our bikes from North Birmingham, he said she was a nurse in a hospital there, it turned out she was the matron in a lunatic asylum.
We went on then to the Dukeries which seems now by the maps to have been in Nottinghamshire.
On the way back his tyre burst so we stuffed it with grass and he had a bumpy ride home for the last five miles.
Not a bad day out for eleven year olds.

Derbyshire also has what are usually described as "Disused Railways".

Bit of a misnomer, as routes like the Monsal Trail are used for recreation by more walkers and cyclists wheelchair users and horseriders now than there ever were passengers. Refreshment Cafe's in former stations, and beautifully scenic routes with the jewel being emerging from the tunnel onto the viaduct at Monsal head.

Another railway connection to Derbyshire for me were the wagons I liked the best on my model railway. They seemed to run and track much better than the majority of wagons, maybe due to their longer wheelbase, and the connection to Derbyshire?

The avid FCF student following the "Remember these All our Yesterdays" thread, may come across entires from yours truly on childhood games nostalgia, and this card game sticks in my memory, which I was able to trace thanks to this tremendous resource on such matters... My first visit to Derbyshire was as a child on a long day coach trip with my parents to visit Buxton and Matlock on our local coach company's excursion menu.
The company in those days was Premier Coaches (Watford) Ltd. which later amalgamated with Albanian Coaches of St Albans to become Premier Albanian.

However my main connection with Derbyshire came much later in the 80's when I was working on the ICI Pipeline Radio System. The system we installed included a digital signalling system to allow all 15 mobiles to ring each other or any of the three bases on the line. It was an amalgamation of the telephone system signalling in use then with the latest PMR (Private Mobile Radio) technology, controlled by a microcomputer dial pad fitted in each vehicle. The company contracted to build the interface control system was Mobicom, Uttoxeter Old Road, Derby where I spent many hours in design consultancy meetings to get the system we wanted. As a result I had plenty of opportunities to tour the surrounding area and enjoyed many a fine brew with the chaps from there!

I wonder how many times in mainstream coverage of the delights of Derbyshire, the Ivatt Diesel Re-creation Society gets a mention. Fear not its covered here, and the British Towns image Building a Diesel Loco is indeed an appropriate tribute. LMS 10000 was the first mainline diesel locomotive.

Bingo, and what's more it is parked near the Original Bakewell Pudding Shop in Bakewell, and it has a super AA Badge.

There are a few claimants for the Original Bakewell Pudding but the Rolls is just up from the "Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop" one of the 3 in the town
