This is Clun Bridge, at Clun Shropshire, a picturesque little village on the way from Shrewsbury to Knighton close to the Welsh border. Paused for a while to give the hound a bit of exercise, loads of easels with folk painting the bridge scene.

Of Course the more impressive Clun Castle is this, so far only found a still picture of its activity in Shropshire, here Approaching Shrewsbury on the Welsh Marches Express

My 1929 Tarmac Steam Lorry a Sentinel DG8 Steam Waggon (1929), with the Shropshire reg gets about a bit. Its owned by a chap from County Durham, but has made an appearance back at its homeland, at the Shrewsbury Steam Fair. Wonder how many miles/ton it gets on the open road.

This years event is due to take place Sunday 28th and Monday 29th August 2022.

Sentinel Waggon Works Ltd were a Shrewsbury Company which Manufactured Steam Powered Waggons.

Sentinel Waggon Works Ltd was a British company based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire that made steam-powered lorries, railway locomotives, and later, diesel engined lorries and locomotives

The company began life about 1875 as Alley & MacLellan based in Polmadie, Glasgow. They moved from Polmadie Road to the nearby Jessie Street where they continued in operation until the 1950s. Alley & MacLellan began producing steam road vehicles in 1906 when they introduced a 5 ton vertical-boiler wagon,
Around 1915 Alley & McLellan moved the steam wagon production to a new factory in England and it continued under a separate company, while Alley & MacLellan continued to operate from Jessie Street until the 1950s. Producing a wide range of engineering products including compressors, valves, etc.

Upon the move of lorry production to Shrewsbury a new company the Sentinel Waggon Works Ltd with production begining in 1915. There were several other slight changes to the name over the company's lifetime when further infusions of working capital were required. The original Alley & MacLellan's early wagons were so successful that it remained in production with relatively few updates until the launch of Sentinel's famous Super in 1923. The company also produced steam railway locomotives and railcars, for railway companies and industrial customers.

Six more post after this one take over the 1000 mark for Part 2 of our Today's County in the Spotlight Part 2.

No reason why Shropshire shouldn't take us over that mark, still plenty to go on. Where is the beer of the day, the pub of the day? Where are the legendary popular music artists? or sports stars surely Billy Wright isn't our only famous sportsman from Shrewsbury. I'm sure poor old Harry Hotspur from England's most northerly County met his end at Shrewsbury in 1403.

What better than to have a sweet and sour chicken in an estate pub in Shrewsbury....why....well its called the Harry Hotspur of course, and chinese is its speciality

Come on you could select one of your own. Six more posts, will do, join in if you can.

That in itself is pretty impressive as Part 1 only got 1045 in total and we still have 12 more counties to go. Now we only need five more for the thousand!! :-D

When I saw that Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, I thought if Harry Hotspur has a pub named after him so will Charles Darwin, how could he not.

So in unassuming estate pubs of Shrewsbury number 2 here is the pub named after Charles Darwin
From the description on what pub the old sign may well have had Charles Dickens image on it instead of Charles Darwin, but all is corrected now :-D

Looking around the Shropshire sporting scene I came across two famous members of the sporting brigade. One retired and has since been disgraced so I will not mention him but instead nominate the only flat racing jockey to have been knighted and born in Shropshire - Sir Gordon Richards:

My first thought, when reading through the places Neil listed, was of my amusement at hearing James Alexander Gordon struggling every Saturday when reading out the football results from Sotland. From his continual mispronunciation of Hamilton Academical, he used to pluralise the name, to his much quoted tongue twisting Forfar 5 Fife 4, which I'm not sure ever happened!

Hamilton Academical are still going strong as you can read here.

That brings back probably a slightly mixed up reminisce for me as sometime in my youth that was a familiar badge as it turned up in many swaps of a collection of football club badges which may well have been issued by petrol stations. Unlike the Esso world cup 1970 coin collection, I haven't retained any of the badges, or collecting folder you were supposed to stick them on. Thinking again, maybe its just the style of the badge that triggered my vague recollection. Would Hamilton Academical really make it into a National set of badges. I'll have to go on a trivia tangent elsewhere :-D
