A place with a fascinating history within Nairnshire is Auldearn, named after a historic castle built in 12th Century. :

One particular fact which may trigger a contribution from bobins is described in Wiki:

There was a Post Office repeater station on the outskirts of the village which was one of only two in the Highland area classed as being of "key importance to national defence" and a "most important link in the A.D.G.B. It is incorrectly described as a radio station in the document and also now marked incorrectly as an "old telephone exchange". It is believed that it was a link from the RAF Sector Operations Centre at Raigmore

The full details are here.

I have spent the last half hour virtually going there on this link!

Anyone followers of the Sensational Alex Harvey Band :?:

Well looking at Nairnshire and one of the images on the flickr list was of some police helicopters, which only appeared in the list not because of the AS vehicle reg but because the verbage on the photo was illustrating the "Patch" covered which included
Remember that the force area – one sixth of the UK landmass and larger than some European countries stretched :
- (in the north) from the northern tip of the Shetland islands
- (in the south) Glencoe and the Ardnamurchan Peninsula;
- from Dalwhinnie in the south-east (where you cannot get further from the sea in Scotland),
- from Auldearn (Nairnshire) on the east (Moray Firth) coast, to
- the Islands of Rockall and St Kilda in the Atlantic Ocean west of the Outer Hebrides.
So the curious, with Nairnshire in the spotlight had to look up "Auldearn"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auldearn
This jumped out of the page,
A local woman, Isobel Gowdie, was tried for witchcraft in 1662
One of the songs on The Sensational Alex Band's debut album "Framed" was "Isobel Goudie" (wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isobel_Gowdie). Let's not trouble the scorers with whether its to anyone's personal taste or not, I suspect not, its here as a personal reminiscence for me as a track from an album which I enjoyed but hadn't a clue what Alex was going on about! :-D

Nairn's oatcakes are not a valid entry for Nairnshires day in the spotlight, although with a name like Nairn the founders of the bakery, originally based in Lanarkshire, but now in Midlothian (numbers 10 and 11 in our yet to be selected Counties. may have some family ancestry connection with Nairnshire County.

So...false alarm...but may get included in 10 or 11 to come.

At last a county I can contribute to. Back almost exactly 10 years ago my wife and I made a trip up to Cawdor to research her ancestors on the Dallas surname.

Here is Cawdor cemetery and church

There are plenty of Dallases buried there but I remember being not entirely convinced that they were in her bloodline.

Note the place of death - Inchyettle. Barely more than a farm and a barn but still within Nairnshire.

Mick, when you were in Pangbourne did you visit the Pangbourne Rail Station tunnel, as I suggested? I hope you did, otherwise you missed this;

Sorry to jump back to a county, but I forgot to ask.

No I'm afraid not James. On the day Bob's wife was feeling a bit under the weather and the most we managed was the walk from the boat mooring to the pub and back. Even that which should have been 10 minutes each way turned out to be 25 due to stopping for rests etc!! :-D

I am sorry to hear that. I think that tunnel might have helped brighten up your day a touch.

Apart from noticing a decent "Bob Ferris" Car-coat, trilby and glasses, no instant recognition from me, and no return from an image search. Could need some clues.

Unless its the chap on the left, and the Nairnshire connection was something to do with his National Service in the 30's :-D

Charles Chaplin?

What the connection could be I've no idea though.

Found the connection straightaway, but would have struggled for a while to find Charles Chaplin.
