Looks like IJ's are easier to find than JZ's so with a tinge of disappointment I submit this. Yes its a GTI but it just looks...ordinary and I don't like the colour, its a dull day and there is a skip behind it....the only other offering was a Porsche which I tend to reject on the grounds of personal indifference to the marque in general, with the only decent looking ones being very early ones.

Some issue over the flag with my usual sites so I have had to resort to Wiki for this image of the possibly disputed flag. There are other options but this seems to be the most common:

Pub of the Day for County Down might as well go for the oldest...established in 1611, aka the Kings arms for the first few hundred years but now known as Grace Neill's, after a former Landlady.

Its in Donaghadee

I've actually run out of patience hunting for a period registration car so I am going to risk posting up a modern car with an SZ registration on the basis that the actual car may get it accepted!! :-D

One of County Down Newcastle's landmarks has housed the supermarket Chain Lidl's store since 2001. The German retailer is set to move from its location next to the Slieve Donard Hotel at Newcastle's listed former train station, where it has operated since 2001, to new build store. The development on Shan Slieve Drive and Bryansford Road, which involves the demolition of the former St Mary’s Primary School building, will also see the construction of a new £500,000 base for Mourne Rescue.

Fascinating, just the old Lidl store housed in the old railway station caught my attention.

POTD....The most interesting Lidl in County Down

Of course, don't turn it into a chore :-D The IJ's were the commonest which popped out of my flickr search
Some of the contributors to flickr tag their descriptions with registration together with the county name.

eg "County Down registration" was something like the search I put in to pull out the Rover quite far down the page

I think a mystery man quiz is called for, this one is easy to find on the web but any ideas before searching?

Who is he and what is the connection with County Down?

I have no idea Mick, so its going to be a guessing game.

I presume he's from Co. Down or has a connection. He does look like a footballer.

So an off the wall guess looks a bit like a young Roger Hunt, yes who played for LIverpool and England, but may have had a County Down Connection. Could we rule out Footballer, if as I expect my first guess is way off the mark.

If someone asked you : "Who invented the modern gearbox, and where did they come from ?" I'm guessing most people wouldn't say : "Harry Ferguson, and Dromara, County Down"

There's more to Harry than gearboxes though.

"In the 1900s the young Harry Ferguson became fascinated with the newly emerging technology of powered human flight and particularly with the exploits of the Wright brothers, the American aviation pioneers who made the first plane flight in 1903 in North Carolina, USA.
The first person to accomplish powered flight in the UK was Alliot Verdon Roe in June 1908, who also flew an aeroplane of his own design, but this had not yet been achieved in Ireland. Ferguson began to develop a keen interest in the mechanics of flying and travelled to several air shows, including exhibitions in 1909 at Blackpool and Rheims where he took notes of the design of early aircraft. Harry convinced his brother that they should attempt to build an aircraft at their Belfast workshop and working from Harry's notes, they worked on the design of a plane, the Ferguson monoplane.
After making many changes and improvements, they transported their new aircraft by towing it behind a car through the streets of Belfast up to Hillsborough Park to make their first attempt at flight. They were at first thwarted by propeller trouble but continued to make technical alterations to the plane. After a delay of nearly a week caused by bad weather, the Ferguson monoplane finally took off from Hillsborough on 31 December 1909. Harry Ferguson became the first Irishman to fly and the first Irishman to build and fly his own aeroplane."

Then there's the three-point-linkage for tractors. And the FF four wheel drive system. And, of course, the Little Grey Fergie :)
